Completed in 1978, Norman Jaffe’s Gruss House is a notable example of the architect’s self-described “Zeus style,” drawing its formal vocabulary from the sky, clouds, and coastal dunes of Eastern Long Island. The Jaffe House’s distinctive shingle roof and Tennessee sandstone walls remained intact, but decades of interior renovations had compromised the clarity of the original design.
The project focused on restoring coherence to the interior without altering the exterior form.
Outdated planning and awkward circulation were addressed through the removal of one of the home’s two monumental masonry fireplaces, allowing a complete reorganization of the internal layout.
The windowless entry façade was preserved, while the ocean-facing elevation was enhanced with new expansive glazing to bring in light and views. The entry courtyard, resurfaced in wood decking, now forms a more integral link between exterior and interior.
Inside, new windows, an island kitchen, and oak-clad walls and floors reestablish a warm, unified material palette. With the fireplace and an additional stair removed, the second-floor space beneath the sweeping roof was transformed to accommodate three bedrooms, a bathroom, and an enlarged primary suite with steam room and sauna.
The renovation was completed with updates to the pool house, new stone-paved exterior areas, rebuilt stone boundary walls, and a redesigned garden.
