MPavilion 2015 will be moved to the corner of Collins Street and Harbour Esplanade in Docklands, providing an ongoing architectural and public art feature for Melbourne.

Melbourne, Australia – Naomi Milgrom AO & Chair of the Naomi Milgrom Foundation today announced that MPavilion 2015 has been gifted to the people of Melbourne and will be relocated from the Queen Victoria Gardens to a Collins Street park in Docklands.

“In its new permanent home, Amanda Levete’s MPavilion 2015 will continue to inspire and be part of our city’s cultural heritage as a public amenity of Melbourne. Amanda’s magical, forest-like structure joins a growing family of architectural masterpieces to be enjoyed by the people of Melbourne for years to come,” Naomi Milgrom said.

The relocation follows the announcement that MPavilion 2015, designed by Amanda Levete of London-based studio AL_A, has been shortlisted alongside a group of esteemed international projects for the famed World Architecture News (WAN) Awards in the Small Spaces category, a specialist category that celebrates small-scale architecture.

MPavilion’s program of talks, workshops and performances created in collaboration with more than 342 arts organisations, designers and architects from Melbourne and around the globe concluded in Queen Victoria Gardens on 7 February 2016. Over four months, 76,000 people attended 419 free events in the temporary pavilion, which is a yearly architecture commission and design event initiated by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation with support from City of Melbourne and the Victorian State Government.

The first MPavilion, commissioned in 2014 and designed by acclaimed Australian architect Sean Godsell, was gifted to the City of Melbourne and permanently resides in the gardens of Hellenic Museum in Melbourne’s CBD. The commission for MPavilion 2016 has been awarded to acclaimed Indian architect Bijoy Jain of Studio Mumbai.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the second MPavilion in the series of four would provide a lasting cultural legacy for Melbourne.

“MPavilion is a unique architectural feature that will provide a new event space, meeting hub and a symbol of the value of public art and urban design for the Docklands community,” the Lord Mayor said.

“The City of Melbourne is pleased to be working with the Naomi Milgrom Foundation and Places Victoria to provide a permanent home for MPavilion 2015.”

The State Government’s property developer Places Victoria will begin works on the installation of MPavillion 2015 at the Docklands site this week.

Places Victoria precincts General Manager Simon Wilson said the pavilion would be incorporated into new landscaping in existing open space between Collins Street and the multipurpose sports courts on Harbour Esplanade.

“We’re very grateful to the Naomi Milgrom Foundation and the City of Melbourne for gifting this beautiful pavilion to Docklands so it can continue to be admired and enjoyed,” he said.
“It will be a new architectural feature for the precinct, a welcome lunch spot for around 15,000 workers in the vicinity and a place to take shelter.

“Please bear with us while the area in which the pavilion will be located is closed during the landscaping and relocation works from late February to mid-2016.”

British Architect Amanda Levete’s design is a high-tech, ultra-thin forest-like canopy comprising a series of five-metre-wide translucent petals with each petal being a mere three millimetres thick. Levete collaborated with Brisbane-based mouldCAM, a company that started by designing high-tech components for marine vessels working with strong, lightweight materials.

MPavilion 2014 designed by Australian architect Sean Godsell won the Australian Institute of Architect’s 2015 Victorian Architecture Award in the Small Project Architecture Category. The design was also shortlisted for the 2014 World Architecture News (WAN) Award in new Temporary Spaces Category, and the Australian Institute of Architect’s 2015 Presidents Prize (Victorian Chapter).

MPavillion 2015 will be installed at the corner of Collins Street and Harbour Esplanade.

MPavilion is a unique architecture commission and design event for Melbourne. The Naomi Milgrom Foundation commissions a new temporary pavilion each year from a leading international architect. 2015 ARCHITECT
Amanda Levete is a Stirling Prize winning architect and founder and principal of AL_A, an international award-winning British design and architecture studio, widely regarded as laying down the agenda for architecture in the twenty-first century. Responding to climate and landscape; she will bring a career-long fascination with organic forms to the challenge of designing Melbourne’s 2015 MPavilion. Her ground-breaking projects include the Media Centre at Lord’s Cricket Ground, Birmingham’s Selfridges department store, and Tokyo’s sinuous Comme des Garçons flagship. AL_A are currently designing the new galleries, courtyard and entrance at the V&A Museum, the biggest building project at the Museum in over 100 years.
