Australia’s Tallest Tower Designed by UNStudio & Cox Receives Planning Approval

The green light was given after the Future Melbourne Committee showed enthusiastic support.

The project for the dual towers, which is collectively named “the Green Spine,” is anticipated to start next year and completed in 2026.

The tower was designed by the UNStudio, headquartered in Amsterdam, in partnership with the Australian firm Cox Architecture.

Spanning 270,000sqm, the vertical village is all set to become Australia’s tallest tower at 365 meters. It is located on a BMW-owned site in Southbank.

At present, the tallest tower in Australia is the Q1 tower, which stands at 1,058 feet. Other super tall buildings in Melbourne include Australia 108 and the Eureka Tower, standing at 1,039 feet and 975 feet, respectively.

Australia’s Green Spine to create many job opportunities

It has been estimated that the project for Australia’s tallest tower will create 4,700 construction jobs. After completion, the tower will also generate 3,250 new job opportunities across multiple industries including office, retail, entertainment, hospitality, and child care.

It is expected that the new hub will support the future growth of Melbourne and its vision to develop into a global smart city.

Philip Rowe, Cox Architecture Director said in his statement that Southbank has been, to some extent, dormant for several years. Their collaborative concept can truly unearth its potential, boost the urban amenity and effortlessly unify the suburb with Melbourne’s CBD. The architectural and cultural impact that the tower will leave on Melbourne is a thrilling prospect and will certainly set a benchmark both locally and internationally, now and in the future as well, he added.

Southbank by Beulah is envisioned to be a vertical mini-metropolis

Southbank by Beulah that creates a bridge between the Royal Botanic Gardens and Melbourne’s Arts Precinct is envisioned to be a vertical mini-metropolis.

The tower that stands out in Melbourne’s skyline will have four different private residences, rooftop sky garden, public and green spaces, commercial offices, town hall, a five-star urban resort, child care center, arts and culture spaces and programs, one health and wellness precinct and retail.

Southbank is inspired by Melbourne’s title of The Garden City. The architects envisaged two twisting terraced forms creating a series of outdoor spaces and green devices along the frontage. Pocket parks are going to be a central point throughout the construction, linking neighborhoods within the residential building.

Caroline Bos, UNStudio co-founder stated that from the early concept to one that has developed into a revolutionary international collaborative project, the outcome is a thrilling prospect for both the project team and for Melbourne. It reaffirms its reputation as the world’s most inhabitable city.

The Green Spine and other major projects will improve the economy

The Green Spine project won the 2018 international competition where UNStudio and Cox Architecture pitted against five other international design teams, OMA, Bjarke Ingels Group, MAD Architects, MVRDV, and Coop Himmelb(l)au.

Three other large-scale projects in Melbourne also got the green light together with Southbank as part of an economic recovery initiative, powered by construction and development. It was led by the Building Victoria’s Recovery Taskforce.

It is anticipated that these chief projects will offer more than a billion-dollar jumpstart to the regional economy in the aftermath of the COVID -19 pandemic. It will also guarantee Victoria real estate’s development in the long-term.

As per Victoria’s planning and housing minister Richard Wynne, the task force in the construction industry created by Southbank by Beulah will see that the building and development industry is a powerhouse for Victoria’s economy through this coronavirus crisis and beyond. The task force will be responsible for carrying out existing projects more efficiently and help new projects to kickstart faster.

In a statement made by Nicholas Reece, chairman of the City of Melbourne’s Planning Portfolio, he stated that at times they hear people in Melbourne say that the city has never perceived anything like the Southbank project. Though people might be exaggerating a bit, they can proudly say that Melbourne has never seen anything like Beulah.
