Commercial and residential property developer Urban Splash has secured planning permission for the first phase of Tutti Frutti, its self build scheme at New Islington, Manchester’s Millennium Community.

The first phase comprises six homes which have been designed by the owners and their individual teams of architects, each of whom were chosen following a design competition held last year. Their mix of designs and approaches will create a unique, colourful streetscape and a brief description of each is outlined below:

Plot 1 (far right on image):
Designed by FKDA Architects, this five storey home includes four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen/diner area. There will also be a secure garage area at the entrance level. Full height windows on each floor will let lots of natural light pass through the house.

Plot 2 (second home from the right on image):
Studio Verna have taken one of Tutti Frutti’s smaller plots and maximised space to deliver a six storey home for the architects’ own family. A colourful façade gives this property prominence and has a stunning interior layout to match, with living space, kitchen and dining areas on the first two floors and four bedrooms over the third and fourth floors. The fifth floor will be an allotment and sun terrace, filled with vegetables and plants to enhance the roofscape.

Plot 3 – The Black Diamond (third home from the right on image):
This four bedroom family home is intended for flexibility. Designed by Glas Architects the property will feature two living areas, an eye-catching double floor dining area – providing excellent panoramic views of the canal – and a wheelchair accessible lift to all floors. Based on a diamond, the house will have frameless glazing to reflect light and shine.

Plot 4 – Blockbuster (third home from the left on image):
The home intended for Plot 4 will feature a large living area, a kitchen with adjoining children’s play area and three/four bedrooms which will face the garden – realising the vision of Rupert Goddard, design director at Sheppard Robson Manchester. Lots of natural light will pass through the house by a lightbox stairwell connecting all of the rooms. There’s also the ‘Lookout’, an elevated, peaceful area which can be used as a reading room, a meditation room or more play space.

Plot 5 – Re-Fab (second image from the left on image):
This plot will be home to a three storey, four/five bedroom property, with ground floor living space, an attractive open gallery mezzanine on the first floor, two large guest bedrooms on the second floor and a final mezzanine floor featuring master bedroom and ensuite, connecting to an external terrace. Designers Chance de Silva Architects will live in the completed property which will be created using existing materials sourced from demolition and recycling sites during the course of construction.

Plot 6 (far left on image):
Designers Roberta Haslam and Richard Daw Architects turned conventional living arrangements upside down in this property, ensuring that residents benefit from maximum levels of natural light and uninterrupted views of the canal. Bedrooms will be located just above entrance level and living areas on the floors above. A dynamic layout will further be achieved through the flexibility of living partitions, with sliding doors separating each room.
