560 North House – 4 Dec 2010
The brief required modern offices from two Grade II listed buildings (1931 with deco influences internally – Oliver Hill was the original architect) in a Westminster conservation area. The design ambition was to provide long life, accessible, and create a zen-like calm interior incorporating high environmental performance with ‘secret’ and ‘silent’ services without the need to open windows to outside noise, dirt and dust.

Westminster Academy
Westminster Academy is a school that sets new standards for educational buildings, meeting the demands of a highly innovative and radical educational agenda and creating a place to learn, interact and aspire. Located in a gritty urban context, dominated by the Westway, the aspiration was to create a new civic landmark in which the pupils, staff and wider community felt a sense of pride. The simple form of the school, responding to the need for a fully sealed building, has a bold, expressive façade stratified into large panels of glazing, vibrantly coloured terracotta tiles in green and yellow and a series of illuminated screens.
Westminster Sustainable Buildings
Experts in design and conservation, as well as residents and developers will be discussing how to make older buildings more sustainable in a workshop aimed at helping to make Westminster’s buildings more environmentally friendly. Among the topics for debate will be living walls, green roofs, and the complex matter of retrofitting buildings – which includes making historic buildings greener while preserving their architectural integrity.
