Redeveloped into a Hotel & serviced Apartments, Conference facilities and a fine dining Restaurant & Bar, the sensitive design aims to preserve the building’s original features while integrating contemporary inserts, including tailored furniture elements and a bespoke roof extension.

Remarkable for its variety of rooms of historical value, the existing Grade II listed structure was also the result of functional modifications in less preservation-orientated times. The project maintains the distinctiveness of these spaces through a zone specific differentiation between new carefully designed additions and restored original elements, to transform and modernize the building into a 98- room luxury hotel.

Articulating this diversity of structures, functions and styles, the project mixes, old and new in a sympathetic take on the eclectic original design, where traces of fading neo-classical elements are associated with humbly emerging Art Deco features.

Throughout the public spaces, noteworthy ornamental features and furniture inherited from public galleries and function rooms are associated with distinctively modern design elements and vintage pieces.

Original patterns discovered on site, were the basis of an extensive study forming the language of new functional ornaments, such as interpretative marquetry or a new performative skin for the building’s extension.

The extension’s uniqueness is defined by the adjustment of its global geometry and contextual adaptation of its skin through local variations. The general facetted shape emerges from a careful study of environmental factors and its fluid adjustment to the discontinuous existing structure. Responding to the historical composition, the resulting profile is additionally shaped to disappear from certain angles coinciding with original perspectives while creating a prominent new façade from others.

Achieved through the iterative production of various physical and associative digital study models, the design process preserved the constant link between the urban scale and the user’s experience through the envelope’s geometry and porosity.
The skin’s bespoke laser-cut adaptive pattern regulates solar gains, views and privacy, forming an abstract object: an ephemeral background set against the classical existing facades.

Declined from an art-deco pattern, the new functional ornament was developed into a grammar system deploying itself along 300 linear meters around the building, merging functional and historical aspects.
