The St. Paul’s Centre at St. Paul’s Church, Hammersmith, London W6
The new work carried out at the Grade II* listed St Paul’s Hammersmith has been premised on a profound understanding of historical precedents developed within a contemporary sensibility, resulting in a confident articulation of the new and a sympathetic reworking of the existing fabric.
Its spiritual life revived by the arrival of a congregation from the evangelical Holy Trinity Brompton, it fell to Richard Griffiths Architects to revive and expand the fabric of the church. Having done the repairs, the architects then proposed a new church to the west of the existing one.
Externally the building references its listed neighbour but it is not deferential. Internally an in-situ concrete frame is exposed throughout, a flush glazed slot in the atrium provides light to the basement.
