Edwardian Home Renovation & Extension, Richmond, London, UK

This sensitive renovation and extension of an Edwardian London home was defined by its historic character. Historic features were still on show, including original tiled entrance flooring, stained glass windows to the stairs. It was important to retain these features, whilst modernising the flow and use of the house.

The house had already seen piecemeal alterations over the years. A conservatory-style rear projection had been replaced with a solid structure, the original porch restored, and a single-storey rear extension and loft conversion added. While these works brought incremental improvements, architectural work was required to address the deeper challenges of the house: a disjointed architectural language externally, broken circulation and limited light spill to rooms. hallways and a disconnection from the garden.

Footprint Architects’ challenge was to break free from these constraints to fully unlock the home’s potential. The project increased daylighting, adding a spacious walk-in-wardrobe area and an accessible lift, and removed unnecessary partitions to transform the three-storey family dwelling into a bright, flowing home that supports modern family living — while remaining sensitive to the rhythm, privacy and heritage of its Richmond street.

The design process began with a thorough analysis of the local architectural vernacular, exploring daylighting, simple circulation and investigating connections to the exterior space while preserving the historic influence.

The solution came in the form of a zinc-clad rear extension and re-organised ground floor that blurs the boundaries between internal and external, while carefully respecting neighbouring building lines.

Aligning the living spaces along a singular axis created a natural pathway that gravitates toward the outdoor space. The reconfigurations made partitions redundant and reframed family life around the new sociable hub. Large glazing reinforces this connection to the outside by flooding the new space with daylighting, offering garden views with option to fully open up in the summer months.

Material choices were equally deliberate. Zinc was selected for its durability, low maintenance and calm tonal quality, offering a contemporary counterpoint to the existing brickwork without mimicry. The humble palette ensures the extension sits quietly within the Edwardian character of the street.

The result is a home that feels both practical and uplifting: brighter, better connected, and highly adaptable to family life. Footprint Architects have reimagined an Edwardian terrace for the long term, creating a contemporary extension rooted in its place and purpose.
