Broadgate Quarter Refurb
John Robertson Architects (JRA) has completed the refurbishment of 1 Snowden Street at Broadgate Quarter, on the border of the City and Shoreditch in London. Completed on behalf of the building owner Hines, JRA’s work repositions the eleven year old building, bringing it up to the standard expected of office accommodation in this dynamic and changing area of the City.
The new reception features a large-scale interactive video artwork by the artist Gabby Shawcross of the Studio of Cinematic Architecture.
The 454,797 sq ft Broadgate Quarter Development has now been offered to the market for sale.
David Magyar, Director of John Robertson Architects said:
“Our repositioning of 1 Snowden Street adds to the compelling offer of Broadgate Quarter to potential buyers. Broadgate Quarter’s position, on the boundary between the financial centre of the City and the innovation cluster in Shoreditch, is one of London’s hottest office locations. Our work taps into the expectations of the mobile, agile workforce, creating a lobby with space to linger and work on the fly, with a centrepiece interactive video artwork that demonstrates the creativity and innovation that drives business in the new city.”
John Robertson Architects was appointed by Hines in 2013 to design a scheme for the improvement of Broadgate Quarter following an invited design competition. The brief included plans for public realm improvements that may follow as a subsequent phase of the redevelopment.
JRA’s refurbishment began in the building reception, replacing an imposing and static corporate lobby with a more informal design with a range of spaces that activate the lobby by providing opportunities for meeting, private working and relaxation. Full height glazing and revolving doors were installed to improve the transparency of the façade, encouraging passers-by into the reception.
The Lobby is divided in two by a folded steel and marble, leather topped desk that sits in front of glass and mesh louvres, which act as an open divider between the space defined as the entranceway and the waiting area. The flooring has been repaved in Blue de Savoie stone and a burnished brass feature wall added to the rear of the space.
JRA’s waiting area features café-style seating, an espresso bar, as well as armchairs and coffee tables to provide a varied range of opportunities for people to use the space, creating a sense of activity about the building. The centrepiece of the waiting area is a large-scale interactive video artwork by the artist Gabby Shawcross of the Studio of Cinematic Architecture. The video wall installation plays time-lapse footage of yesterday’s horizon.
JRA designed illuminated hanging sculptures for the building atrium, adding colour and light to this previously overlooked space that runs the height of the building.
JRA’s refurbishment included the replacement of the lifts and toilet facilities, as well as a Cat A fit out on the 8th, 9th and 10th floors. A Terrace on the 9th floor has been fitted with planters and offers a bird’s-eye view of the creative cluster in Shoreditch.
High Quality cyclist facilities have been created in the basement of the building, with 180 cycle parking spaces and high quality, gym style locker rooms equipped with showers.
