Federation of Korean Industries Tower Opens In Seoul
The new headquarters for the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) has opened to the public.
Federation of Korean Industries Tower
The 50-story, 240 meter tall tower is the first in South Korea to use a pressurized underfloor air distribution system, includes integrated photovoltaic panels on its façade, and is South Korea’s first commercial building to receive the highest score for sustainable design, Grade 1 in Environment Friendly Building Rating, in an independent review conducted by the Korean Institute of Construction Technology (KICT).
ESD (Environmental Systems Design, Inc.) provided MEP design and performed an optimization analysis for the positioning and placement of the façade’s photovoltaic panels. The resulting design maximizes the amount of energy the panels collect from the sun to generate power for the tower’s electrical systems.
The underfloor air distribution system, the first of its kind in Korea, allows for greater individual temperature control and full flexibility for the office space. The building’s central cooling and heating plant uses highly efficient systems components and reduces the electrical demand through ice storage system.
“ESD’s fully integrated delivery process of our design and consulting services allowed for a seamless transition from design to implementation/construction,” said Mr. Mehdi Jalayerian, Executive Vice President at ESD. “Our consistent communication and collaboration supported the implementation/construction team’s comprehensive understanding and successful execution of the innovative design features.”
ESD collaborated with the architects, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, and structural engineers, Thornton Tomasetti.
