Palermo Architecture – Introduction
Palermo is the capital city of the island of Sicily, in southern Italy. The city has around 855,000 inhabitants (with around 1.2 million in the metropolitan area), and is located in the northwest part of the island. It is over 2,700 years old and was once part of the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire.
Architecture in Palermo – panoramic view across the Old City rooftops:
Famous Palermo buildings include Palermo Cathedral, San Cataldo (Norman architecture), Chiesa della Martorana, San Domenico Church and Santa Caterina Church and the Teatro Massimo (largest theatre in Italy, and third largest of Europe). Well known public spaces include the Piazza Pretoria and the Quattro Canti a square at the crossing of the main streets dividing the town into its quarters.
Other important historic buildings include San Giovanni degli Eremiti, Palazzo dei Normanni (seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly – Norman architecture), Cappella Palatina, Teatro Politeama, Palazzo Abatellis and Santa Maria dello Spasimo. Although best known for historic architecture our Sicilian guide can show you a range of old and new, or just buildings of a certain age. These buildings can all be visited on our Palermo Architecture Tours.

Palermo Architecture Walking Tours
Palermo Architectural Tours can focus on traditional Sicilian buildings, contemporary buildings or both. The Palermo Architecture Tour can take your group to see the most significant buildings or can be based around your group’s architectural interests.
We can provide information on programme, geographical areas and building types up to a year ahead of your Sicily tour. For example, a group interested in Palermo office buildings could receive advice to form an itinerary ahead of their visit to Italy.
Visitors can be met from the airport, train station, ferry port, their accommodation, or at the starting point of their Sicilian architectural walking tour.
