Venice Architecture – Introduction
Venice is the capital city of the Italian region of Veneto and is located in the north east part of the country. The city has 270,000 inhabitants, but it feels small parly due to the high density.
Famous Venetian buildings include St Mark’s Basilica on Piazza San Marco, La Fenice (opera house), the Doge’s Palace, Ca’ d’Oro plus the less well known Ca’ Pesaro and Ca’ Rezzonico. A well known landmark is the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal, roughly in the middle of the city. Although best known for historic architecture our guide can show you a range of old and new, or just buildings of a certain age. These buildings can all be visited on our Venice Architecture Tours.
The Ticket Booth (Biennale – Giardini Pubblici) was finished in 1952 and completely restored in 2004, no longer in use:

Key contemporary Venice buildings include the Querini Stampalia Foundation Building and Aula Magna Ca’ Foscari both by Carlo Scarpa and the residential complex by Cino Zucchi (Giudecca).
More recent buildings include San Michele Cemetery Extension by David Chipperfield Architects, LCV Law Court Offices Venice by C+S Associati, Mazzorbo island Housing by Giancarlo De Carlo, Fondaco dei Tedeschi – proposal by OMA and close by Jesolo Lido Village Condominium by Richard Meier & Partners Architects.
A major recent structure is the Quarto Ponte sul Canal Grande – a bridge over the Grand Canal by Santiago Calatrava Architects.
Famous architects with buildings in the city include Scarpa, Aalto, Calatrava, Meier, Koolhaas, Stirling, Zucchi and Chipperfield.

Visitors can be met from the Santa Lucia train station, their accommodation, or at the starting point of their architectural walking tour in Veneto. Please note Jesolo is out of the area, almost 1 hour from Venice. Also please note high water is infrequent but in fall and spring can be an issue, the more advance notice the better but please consider (or ask us) when defining dates.
