Hansen Compound Building
The Hansen Compound, a sensitive refurbishment and redevelopment project in an affluent area of Jerusalem. An old leper colony run by German nuns had closed in the year 2000 and there was a proposal to convert the old stone building into a hotel. However the structure is now being transformed into a space for artists including some from Bezalel Academy – a centre for design, media and technology.
Although the architectural intervention was minimal – mostly conservation of a fairly small two-storey building – the whole process & programme was positive. The building is due to open later in 2013 with a performance in the courtyard due to take place in just one month.
Compound Hansen is located in Talbiyeh, near the Jerusalem Theater. The building previously served as a hospital for lepers.
The Hansen Leper’s Hospital building was designed by German architect Conrad Schick.
