In the era of concrete mass and boxed structures, this gripping residence sits amidst a completely occupied posh colony of farms in the heart of New Delhi. Designed for a modern Indian multi-generation family, that is rooted in traditional values, the residence is intended to cater to the lifestyle of the different people inhabiting the house, while catering to their public and private needs, connecting with the surrounding natural ambience all through.

Spread over 2.5 acres of land, this modern residence is designed on the principles Japanese zen module modelling linear lines. Exemplifying a strategic use of voids over mass, the spaces that have been developed reserve a visual axis of their own. The entrance is marked by an amalgam of materials celebrating nature and the man-made in their elemental state. Earthy wooden shades stain the scenery of a stately entrance encompassing a water body and a solitary tree that add accents to an otherwise muted color palette.The design also brings together several artworks and sculptures, designed by artist GayatriSekhri, who is also the owner of the residence.

Timber and steel with a grey driveway take care of the horizontals, while glass and granite make up the verticals connecting a symphony of spaces; the foyer and drive court through one axis and the prayer room and living through the other. This is manifested not only physically, but through the path of light travelling through them, boasting of their voluminous presence vis-a-vis each other, making the spectator experience the entirety of it with a hint of enigma, as to what lies beyond. One space unfolds into the other, creating a mollifying experience.

Vertical punctures determine the planning. Protagonists of the project, the courtyards provide an unhindered view of the encircling expanse awarding every space with visual relevance, such that they can be enjoyed from the alfresco, while the alfresco acknowledges their presence through screens of glass and columns that lace the periphery of the built frame. The entrance façade is marked by timber, which are also used to block the east sun. With glass running amuck and open spaces commanding this mighty form, simplification is invited through textures and rendition of light constituting materials that advertise the intention of the designer.

The built up of 12.5 thousand square feet is divided into two floors. The ground floor houses the drawing room, dining area, media room, kitchen, master suite, 2 powder rooms and Pooja room. Small courtyards and gardens beautifully complement each of these spaces. The first floor comprises of 2 suites, 2 guest rooms, gymnasium, pantry and terrace garden. Both the floors are connected through a white floating staircase. This staircase is an ‘Ekphrasticexperience’, as it bridges the two principal courtyards visually through the glazing that the white walls flanking the floating ascend wear thin. It adds stability and serenity to the capacious double height space.

The opulence permeates through the membrane of minimalism and paints the interiors luxuriously. A string of sculptures inspired by human form underscores the artistic vibe of the area. Semi-private precincts are filled with vistas of the scape and are endowed with a rich, contemporary composition to set them apart. Furniture in bold blues with gilded accents, mother of pearl tables and grey-fabric wall panelling sprawl the space andthe bar adjoining the drawing room flaunts its luxurious backdrop in beaten golden laminate. Following formal living room’s footsteps, the dining room boasts familiar features of flamboyance with printed fabric enwrapping stately chairs and a Victorian chandelier lighting up the space.

As opposed to the grandiosity of the formal area, the bed room surrenders to the melody of modern minimalism sung by the entire edifice. Mono texture in its approach, leather furniture pieces find their respite in color modulation as the entire room painted in white, sees a burst of crimson in the bed back and the sofa chair. The aesthetics of the room and meagre movables applaud the beauty of simplicity cultivating a cosmopolitan cave. Wood texturally and visibly amplifies the aesthetics by adding earthy undertones to the space in combination with hues of grey.

The family lounge overlooking the courtyard with an enticing balcony laced with glass railing supplementing the glazing masquerading as the wall breaks the monotony of white bare walls with a tangerine couch and wooden consoles. The decoration is finite, yet striking with the thunder stolen by stand-alone sculptures racing the floor and the wall inflating the ornamental quotient of the space. Appreciating the openness on the inside, we pull the force out of the intrinsic to assess the extrinsic. An Edifice’s elevation is its first impression and with design devices of such nature at work, the façade of this one is no less than splendid and grand.

The complexity of the planning is masked by a clean box on box facia dipped in white with accents of wood and granite. The nocturnal view is ruled by prudent lighting. The abundance is endorsed by the sheer volume, form and amenities of this building where craftily principles of minimalism weaves into the needs of extravagant living – open spaces, pool, water bodies, double heights, courtyards, open chambers, larger spaces and a variety of vistas.

Landscape is minimalistic by making use of cobbles and granite slabs of homogeneous hues, inviting heterogeneity through a play of textural transition.A visual work of art, the foliage is planted in herd and solo to achieve a desirous view of the verdure at some areas where as the impact of sculptural solitude in others binding a space together through streaks of green.

A plethora of design strategies makes it wonder for the eye and environment, an open plan structure promotes ventilation as courtyards induce stack effect and with water bodies and foliage punctuating the hard scape it helps ameliorate the micro climate of the precinct. Wooden and aluminium louvers act as sun breakers counteracting the down side of employing glass in large quantities. Double-glazed windows and green roofs act as heat hindrances, which allow the sunlight to flood the spaces without heating them up beyond requirement.

An abode of modern sensibilities and matter throws light on the fusion of mortal and environmental needs setting a precedent for the enterprise of construction and aesthetics, promising a space built on strong values of design and nature.
