Delft, 4 July, 2012 – Calvijn Groene Hart comprehensive school celebrates topping out
On Monday 2 July 2012 the new building of the Calvijn Christian comprehensive school in Barendrecht, designed by Mecanoo architects, celebrated its topping out. The 9,000 square-metre Calvijn Groene Hart site offers all forms of secondary-school education for roughly 1,250 pupils. The school building will come into use at the beginning of 2013.

The green campus of Calvijn Groene Hart, with sports pitches, school yards and green areas, is located on the south edge of Barendrecht with a view across the Zuidpolder. With plenty of glass and unusual brickwork, the atmosphere of the school is welcoming. Two striking features of the building are the rounded corners of the three wings and the playful composition of large and small windows with here and there an elongated window.
The wings combine to form a triangular central area with staggered light wells and overhead daylight. Inside the school the wood walls and frames make for a warm atmosphere. The central hall stands out with its orange colour, forming a landmark for all five staff teams. Every team has their own ‘living room’ in one of the wings, where pupils can work on assignments and study together in keeping with the Calvijn educational philosophy.
