Green light for green Eurocity in Gibraltar

The Manser Practice’s eco-friendly, mixed use project for Gibraltar receives planning permission

Eurocity, a £80m mixed use scheme that will transform the business heart of Gibraltar, has just received planning permission. The development, for Bentley Investments, will provide affordable accommodation for city workers, a new destination for shopping and leisure, and new public spaces in the form of open alleyways punctuated with cooling, shaded, courtyards. The design takes its lead from the Government’s mission to achieve a low carbon economy and to make Gibraltar as environmentally sustainable as possible.

Designed by the award-winning Manser Practice, the eco-friendly development comprises three lozenge-shaped towers with a landscaped multi-purpose podium for the general public and commercial space at the street level. Comprising 360 residential units and 120,000 sq m of retail and office space the green and shady complex will seek to provide amenities such as a spa, gym, swimming pools and restaurants. The podium levels above the car park will become private residents’ gardens with lush planting.

The careful arrangement of the slender buildings will create view out, and generate new views, of the Rock of Gibraltar from neighbouring developments.

The Manser Practice’s design focuses on sustainability, permeability and the creation of a vibrant new space for the British Overseas Territory with a population of 32,000. The development will feature solar shading, brise-soleil and green roofs with integrated solar panels.
