The place was named after the Austrian actor and director Max Reinhardt (* 1873, † 1943), co-founder of the Salzburg Festival. It cannot be determined from the available sources when the decision on the naming was made.
Max-Reinhardt-Platz is framed by the Haus für Mozart, the Furtwänglerpark with the adjacent University of Salzburg and the Kollegienkirche. Franziskanergasse, Hofstallgasse and Wiener Philharmoniker-Gasse lead away from it.
