Nuremberg Fair
BRIEF
Extension of the fair entryway, conference room for 1000 participants to relieve the capacity constraints of the fair.
ADDED VALUE
The construction of an additional conference room and the extension of the foyer entrance would eliminate the capacity bottleneck of the fair, but it would only be adding an extra component to the 1960s building. With its 250 meter long louvered roof, the design additionally creates a mega-sign that fulfills multiple functions simultaneously: it organizes the various parts; it provides a unique address; it connects the interior with the exterior space and defines an “urban foyer” that extends the main foyer from the forecourt to the entrance to the new fair park.
The former centre entrance to the Nuremberg Fair was inappropriate in its “role” as the main entrance: the narrow entrance lobby was difficult to recognize from the exterior and leads into a completely unclear building configuration. The new louvered roof can be seen even from far away, acting as a sign which connects various exterior and interior spaces. It floats like a large horizontal sail 17 metres across the entrance area connecting the subway, taxi drop-off, and bus stop, and marks the main entrance to the Nuremberg Fair– its membrane cushions also cover the central entrance hall that opens up behind the glass façade.
Like an angular, large-scale sculpture, the Brussels hall intrudes into the interior of the entrance hall. Its design – sloping surfaces and edges – are derived from the pattern of the existing hexagonal buildings and have generated to an independent, distinctive architecture. An encircling band of anthracite-coloured tinted windows and enamelled glass complements the stringent black-and-white appearance of the structure. The generous flight of steps made of white terrazzo tiles accompanies the visitor into the open, 540 square metre foyer in the upper storey, which joins comfortably to the existing congress area.
Inside, the hall provides a surprise with its cosy, almost private atmosphere, which is supported by warm colours and soft materials with their haptic qualities. The Brussels hall provides space for around a thousand congress participants, who get a view of the fair park and the entrance hall through ceiling-high window areas. Textile panels of pea-green material line the seven metre high room and spread their pattern of irregularly sized triangles like a large-scale puzzle over the walls and ceilings. Equipped with modern technology, the hall can be joined to the gallery in front by opening large doors, for example for congress breaks. From up there, the view includes the entire entrance hall and extends into the green park and the central forecourt of the Nuremberg fair.
Twelve spun concrete columns support the 1500 tonne, 12,500 square metre new roof at a height of 17 metres. The vertical aluminium lamellae are fixed to two steel trussed girders with hollow box section. The four metre wide interim spaces in the roof construction are covered by light, translucent EFTE air cushions, which are printed with a dot matrix pattern in the area of the entrance hall. Towards the roof apex on the forecourt, the vertical aluminium lamellae incline more and more towards the horizontal and become ever slimmer so that they finally reach a point.
