New Frankfurt School of Finance & Management Design
Frankfurt School of Finance & Management situated in one of Europe’s leading financial capitals has selected Henning Larsen Architects’ design proposal for a new school located in the heart of Frankfurt. The 42,000 m2 project is designed in collaboration with landscape architects ManMadeLand and engineering companies Innius RR, Werner Sobek, Transsolar and BPK.
“The central idea of Henning Larsen Architects’ vision convinced us. The campus conveys playfulness. With its central mall and various open spaces and terraces, it invites students, executives, faculty and staff as well as graduates and guests to stay”, explains Professor Dr. Udo Steffens, President of Frankfurt School of Finance & Management.
The architecture of the building encourages students to interact with the surrounding city; lecture rooms and conference facilities are situated adjacent to the library, canteen and shops – functions within the campus buildings which are open to the public.
The building is made up of tall volumes creating an oblong, public zone in the centre that will become the central meeting place and an open and inviting study environment. The visual link between the new school and Frankfurt’s central business district will strengthen the connection between the academic and commercial environments.
”A successful educational building provides inspiration for students and professors. It is particularly a matter of creating spaces that promote collaboration and dialogue as well as concentration and focus”, says Louis Becker, Partner and Designer Director at Henning Larsen Architects. “Universities are very important players in society; transparency and openness are thus important design parameters to allow them to become an active part of the city.”
The international competition for Frankfurt School of Finance & Management’s new building was arranged in a collaboration between the School and the City of Frankfurt. Henning Larsen Architects competed against four invited teams, including world-renowned architects Zaha Hadid, OMA and Dominique Perrault.
The winning design is the result of a successful cooperation between Henning Larsen Architects’ offices in Copenhagen and Munich. The school will open to students in 2016.
