Located across from the St. Etienne station on the Esplanade de France, the influence of the intervention at the heart of the BIA Châteaucreux is a link between neighborhoods and horizon lines, a low point in the topography of St. Etienne in front of a preferred route to the city center. Combined with the scale of the project and the symbolic value of the program, This unique location gives the project a special status in the construction of the city.

The Cité du Design is a new international institution for communication, dissemination, research and training for design. Its most experimental element is the so called Platine, a large 200×32 m single space that articulates the different buildings and activities of the Cité du Design.

The Platine is an interclimatic laboratory whose adaptable skin encloses several programs and responds to their needs in terms of light and climate.

The idea is to develop a long built ‘continuum’ on the site to interact with adjacent streets. A linear construction that rears up and unfolds but also hugs the ground line to form a low accessible building – one that opens spacious courts and lifts bold overhangs.

The adaptable performance space can be configured to accommodate 1,100 to 7,200 people and host a variety of productions, from music to sports events including tennis and skating. Access to the concert hall is across a broad ramped podium that incorporates the artists’ and backstage facilities and bridges a busy road.
