Globalisation & the Architect Debate

Robert Adam, Director of ADAM Architecture said, “Globalisation is the driving force in the modern world. It has an unavoidable effect on contemporary architecture. If we want to understand the underlying forces behind architecture today, we have to understand globalisation.”

‘Globalisation & the Architect’ debate at the RIBA on 25^th May 2010

The RIBA and The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment are hosting a debate on Tuesday 25^th May at the RIBA, 66 Portland Place, W1 at 6.30pm titled ‘Globalisation and the Architect’ – the role of the architect in global development practice and community sustainability.

From Masdar to Dongtan the rapidly expanding economies of the developing world are shaping new cities at unprecedented speed and scale. Western ‘starchitects’ and practices have been popular choices for signature buildings and masterplanning in both the Middle and Far East. Will the focus remain on imported approaches or will there be a shift in to more local solutions?

Joining Hank Dittmar, Chief Executive of the Prince’s Foundation, for this facilitated debate are:
– Robert Adam, architect and Director of ADAM Architecture, who has written widely on globalisation and challenges the norms of western-based approaches to design, planning and development.
– Peter Head, Director of ARUP, who is an engineer on the Dongtan project in China and will talk about designing a new city at speed – and whether a local approach can work in practise.
– Rory Stewart Executive Chair of the Turquoise Mountain Foundation will talk about how his charity is helping strengthen and regenerate the historic quarter of Kabul.

The event is part of the RIBA’s International Dialogues: Architecture and Climate Change talks sponsored by Gleeds.

RIBA Trust presents new series of Architecture and Climate Change talks for March 2010

International Dialogues: Architecture and Climate Change

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) are pleased to present another season of International Dialogues: Architecture and Climate Change talks, sponsored by Gleeds. This season begins with a talk on vernacular architecture by Professor Paul Oliver and is followed by a private view of the Djenne exhibition at the RIBA, exploring the community and architectural traditions of the Djenne mud-builders.

Francis Kéré joins us to talk about designing buildings to suit climatic needs, including for his home country of Burkina Faso and C. Anjalendran will be discussing his visionary projects in Sri Lanka, such as the SOS Children’s Village orphanages made from cheap, locally sourced material. Finally, Professor John Schellnhuber and Dr Rajendra Pachauri (availability dependent) from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will discuss the future international agenda for climate change.
