Modernity and the Future of Tradition Debate
‘Modernity and the Future of Tradition’ – a debate organised by the Traditional Architecture Group (TAG), a linked society of the RIBA
Will Alsop and Robert Adam go face to face on modernity and tradition.
On 9th June 2010 practitioners and commentators will discuss the meaning of modernity and the role of tradition in modern society, and their impact on architecture today.
Will Alsop and style guru, Stephen Bayley, will present modernity. Robert Adam Architects and professor Samir Younes of the University of Notre Dame will make the case for tradition. Alan Powers, Professor Richard Hayward and Ettore Mazzola will join the debate that will then open to the floor. The event will be introduced by Traditional Architecture Group (TAG) chair, Alireza Sagharchi, and will be moderated by RIBA Past President, Sunand Prasad.
This event is being held at the University of Notre Dame, London Centre, 1 Suffolk Street SW1, at 6.30pm – 8pm. Tickets must be booked in advance. Please go to the TAG website www.traditionalarchitecture.co.uk to confirm attendance. Payment will be required on the door.
This is the first of a series of debates under the title Architecture, Modernity, Tradition held jointly by the RIBA Trust, the Traditional Architecture Group, the University of Greenwich and the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA). The debates are intended to explore the concepts and ideas behind modern architecture in a spirit of enquiry avoiding confrontation.

The RIBA and The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment are hosting a debate on Tuesday 25th May at the RIBA, 66 Portland Place, W1 at 6.30pm titled ‘Globalisation and the Architect’ – the role of the architect in global development practice and community sustainability.
The event is part of the RIBA’s International Dialogues: Architecture and Climate Change talks sponsored by Gleeds.
Tickets cost £8.50 (£5.50 RIBA members, students, concessions).
