CTBUH Announces Award of Excellence Winners for Annual Awards Program

CHICAGO – December 4th, 2019 – The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is pleased to announce the Award of Excellence Winners for the CTBUH 2020 Awards Program. The winning projects represent the very best tall buildings, urban contributions, technologies, and innovations emerging recently in cities around the world.

Winners were selected across a variety of categories, with projects in the “Best Tall Building” track falling into five height thresholds (i.e., under 100 meters, 100–199 meters, 200–299 meters, 300–399 meters, and 400 meters and above). Additional categories include: Urban Habitat, Renovation, Interior Space, and Construction, alongside five categories focused specifically on Engineering achievements. Awards for Innovation, Lifetime Achievement, 2020 CTBUH Fellows and 10 Year Awards will be announced at a later date.

“This year’s Award of Excellence Winners communicate the diversity of interdisciplinary thought and innovation that will characterize both current and future generations of urban development around the world,” said Best Tall Building Jury Chair Karl Fender, Director at Fender Katsalidis Architects. “These recognitions, bestowed by the world’s premier authority on tall buildings, showcase these projects to a global audience and help drive a meaningful conversation about the quality of our urban environments.”

The Award of Excellence Winners will now move on to the next stage of the CTBUH Awards Program, sending the owner/developers and design/engineer teams for the projects to the CTBUH 2020 Tall + Urban Innovation Conference, where they will compete in front of an international audience and live juries for “Best in Category” distinctions. The event will conclude with the announcement of the “2020 Best Tall Building Worldwide.”

The 2020 Tall + Urban Innovation Conference will take place in Chicago from April 5–7, 2020. Hosted at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, the conference will include not only an awards ceremony, but also a dinner, a VIP networking reception, and separate program tracks discussing hot topics in the urban development and tall building industry.

Registration for the 2020 Tall + Urban Innovation Conference is now open at tallinnovation.com, where additional details can be found.

CTBUH 2013 Tall Buildings Data Research Report

2013: Second-Busiest Skyscraper Year in History

The tallest 20 buildings completed in 2013

CHICAGO, JAN. 15 – The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has
released its annual report, the 2013 Tall Building Data Research Report, part of the Tall
Buildings in Numbers data analysis series.

The tallest 20 buildings completed in 2013:
Tallest Skyscrapers in 2013

By all indications, the small increase in the total number of tall-building completions
from 2012 into 2013 is indicative of a return to the prevalent trend of increasing
completions each year over the past decade.

CTBUH 2013 Tall Buildings Data Research Report Key Findings

• 2013 was the second-most successful year on record for completion of
buildings 200 meters or greater in height. In 2013, 73 such buildings were
completed, second only to the 81 completions of 2011. In 2012, the number
had dropped slightly to 69.

• For the fourth year running, nine “supertall” buildings of 300 meters or greater
were again completed in 2013. These 36 supertalls, built over the last four
years, comprise nearly half the total number of supertalls that now exist (77).

• Of the 73 buildings completed in 2013, 12 buildings – or 16 percent – entered
the list of 100 Tallest Buildings in the World.

• For the sixth year running, China had the most 200-meter-plus completions of
any nation, at 37 – located across 22 cities.

• The tallest building to complete in 2013 was the 355-meter JW Marriott
Marquis Hotel Dubai Tower 2 in Dubai, UAE.

• Three of the five tallest buildings completed are in the United Arab Emirates,
for the second year in a row.

• Europe has two of the 10 tallest buildings completed in any given year for the
first time since 1953.

• Of the 73 buildings over 200 meters completed in 2013, only one, 1717
Broadway in New York, was in the United States.

Tall buildings 200 meters or taller completed each year from 1970 to 2014.

The Tall Buildings in Numbers data analysis series takes a statistical and graphical look at various topics related to tall buildings, such as height, function, geographical location, energy requirements, structure and others.

In addition, at the close of each year, the CTBUH produces a study which provides a written and graphical synopsis of tall buildings completed during the subject year, with a focus on buildings over 200 meters in height.
