Innovative and visionary works from the Master of Architecture II Graduate Studio, Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union
WHAT: An exhibition of the work of the Students of Cooper Union’s Master of Architecture II Graduate Studio 2012-2013 thesis projects and other works in “Expanding Boundaries.” Time has been the subject of the studio, focusing on the Urban Dimension and Nature.
The Urban Environment, the most important cultural and social production, is seen as the determining factor of architecture while Nature is explored from the philosophical and scientific discourses that have explained it throughout history to the present. Projects include “Clouds as Environmental Tools – Sahara Dessert, Sudan,” “Military Urbanism: The City as Enactment of Segregation – Cape Town, South Africa,” “Between Land and Water: Mangroves and Anoxic Natural Structures” and “Fluctuating City: Topographies of Population Activity in Manhattan.”
The work represents an approach that, without prescribed boundaries, challenges the established frontier of architecture through critical and visionary responses to contemporary issues while simultaneously thinking and re-thinking architectural discourse itself.

The Critical Moment : Architecture in the Expanded Field
Sep 12 – Sep 21, 2012
An exhibition featuring innovation and visionary works designed by graduates of the Master of Architecture II Program, Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union
WHAT: Featuring the advanced work achieved by graduates of the Master of Architecture II Program in the Houghton Gallery at The Cooper Union, students will have their innovative 2012 thesis projects on display in “The Critical Moment: Architecture in the expanded field” (opening night: 9/12). Questioning the very boundaries of Architecture itself, the work engages viewers to re-think the object of architecture.
Without prescribed boundaries, the exhibition features an impressive range of work, where one project, “Prosthetic Aesthetics,” explores how technology affects the body, and how does this affect architecture? and another thesis, “Parallel Cities,” examines the existence of Cairo in the Arab Spring’s aftermath, where the unprecedented electronic sharing of ideas created two entities: an actual city and a virtual city.
Collectively, the MArch II projects address a myriad of critical issues shaping today’s architectural discourse. From urban theory to the present condition of globalization and the continual emergence of new scientific developments and technologies, the Masters program exhibition illuminates the graduates’ year-long extensive research using literature, photography, drawing, technology, history and urban studies to develop innovative programs to stimulate discussions and bring forth potential solutions that may not otherwise be obvious.

THE COOPER UNION END OF YEAR SHOW
More than 300 pioneering student works on view across the disciplines of architecture, art and engineering
For more than a century-and-a-half, the Cooper Union End of Year Show has marked its students’ transition from studios, laboratories and classrooms to the gallery. A time honored tradition, the first recorded exhibition took place in 1860 at the historic Foundation Building, now joined by 41 Cooper Square, the institution’s LEED Platinum academic building.
Works on view represent the culmination of each student’s unique experience in Cooper Union’s top ranked programs. Prominent Cooper Union alumni of the past century include Alex Katz (visual art), Daniel Libeskind (architecture) and Russell Hulse (physics). Admission is free and open to the public.

When it comes to small architecture publications, something is clearly in the air, as demonstrated by the recent increase in architecture journals and zines worldwide.
This roundtable, moderated by Log editor and founder Cynthia Davidson, will focus on young architecture journals in the NYC area by bringing together the editors of CLOG (clog-online.com), the editors of another pamphlet (anotherpamphlet.com), and the founding/current editors of Pidgin (pidginmagazine.com) to both situate each publication in a recent historical context, and to discuss the motivations for and practicalities of launching and editing printed architectural journals today.
