ALLIED WORKS ARCHITECTURE SHARES DESIGN FOR ARVO PÄRT CENTRE COMPETITION
Allied Works Architecture (AWA) shared drawings, renderings and other images of its design for the Arvo Pärt Centre in Estonia.
The firm’s design, entitled Between Earth and Sky, was named the second-place winner in the international competition for a new archive and performance space for the famed composer.
“Our design is defined by the conversation between earth and sky, at the intersection of stone and light,” said Brad Cloepfil, Founder and Design Principal of AWA. “The building inscribes the earth with a calligraphy of stone, defining the Centre’s domain within the conifer forest.”
The 2,270 sqm project was designed as a place of inspiration and reflection, a place of study and a place of making.
The intersection of earth and sky creates the context and contrast of dark and light, a range of qualities and experience that provoke acts of creativity.
Honoring the ethics and legacy of Arvo Pärt, the new Centre is envisioned as a place between: the individual and the community, song and silence, earth and sky, life and eternity.
Allied Works is an interdisciplinary architecture and design practice that operates from offices in New York City and Portland, Oregon.
Founded by Brad Cloepfil in 1994, the practice is defined by a deep concern for the landscape, human experience and craft, as well as the preservation and enhancement of the public realm.
The firm is currently working on a range of projects at multiple scales: adapting a historic post office and federal building to a new campus hub for the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Porltand, OR; a private residence in Bridgehampton, NY; a workplace for an advertising agency in New York City; as well as a collection of new initiatives incorporating books, film, product and exhibition design.
