AART Architects has won the competition for “Nautical School of the Century”, which by its unique location at one of the most historic waterfronts in Denmark and its maritime expression will become a significant landmark.
In collaboration with the contractor firm Raunstrup and engineering firm Alectia the Danish studio AART Architects has won the competition “Nautical School of the Century” for Skagen Skipperskole, which will provide the framework for the future education of skippers and chief officers for the Danish fishing fleet and merchant marine.
Because of its unique location at the historic waterfront of Skagen the building is designed as a “hinge” between the city and the harbour and the openness of the building toward both the city and the harbour is reflected in its sharp sculptural form which in a maritime gesture communicates with the surrounding harbour- and cityscape.
In this way the sculptural form of the building reflects Skagen’s maritime history which has made the city a popular holiday destination for tourists around the world. In other words Skagen Skipperskole will become a significant landmark for seafaring as well as the city of Skagen since the architecture condenses the city’s cultural identity.
The wild forces of nature
“As a sculptural ship the building is situated between the city and the sea overlooking the wild forces of nature. In this way the architecture expresses the urge to travel and sense of adventure, which through history has characterized the men and women who chose the sea as their workplace. Therefore we have sought to create an architectural symbol of the proud, maritime traditions,” Torben Skovbjerg Larsen, partner in AART Architects, explains.
The maritime expression is also emphasized in the distinctive balcony, which like a ship deck embraces the first floor and takes advantage of the magnificent sea view, as well as the facades of the building, which are covered with white glass surfaces thus creating a bright, Nordic expression and reflecting the large cruise ship’s outstretched, white surfaces.
The building is expected to be inaugurated in November 2011.
