CENTRAL GLASS INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION 2ND PRIZE WINNING ENTRY
“Lightcore” by Kutonotuk (Leena Cho & Matthew Jull) won the Second Prize for the Central Glass International Architectural Competition in Tokyo, Japan. The theme was to speculate on glass architecture in year 2050 and the thoughts and actions that will shape the use of glass in architecture forty years from now. The awarded project was presented at the UIA Congress held in Tokyo and is published in Shinkenchiku December 2011 issue.
2030: The density of cities intensifies with mass migration. Individual towers are now packed closer together for efficient use of space and to accommodate the masses of people. Light is drastically reduced to the building interior through the facades. Exterior windows become useless for transmitting daylight.
2050: In a desperate search for natural light and quality living and work space, towers are reconfigured with lightcores and active sunlight focusing from the roof. Daylight is transmitted deep into the interior via reflective, light-transmitting glass cores, fiber optics, lenses, and transparent interior partitions.
