Studio Meda’s design integrates a simple roof structure providing shelter from the rain with the locking facilities required for the secure storage of bicycles. The result is a clean, elegant and sustainable solution that would be instantly recognisable across Bankside.

Studio Meda’s design will be built as a prototype later this year. The shortlist were selected anonymously from over 50 entries and interviewed by a panel including: Jonathan Bell, Architecture Editor, Wallpaper* magazine; Sarah Ichioka, Director, The Architecture Foundation; Deborah Saunt, Director, DSDHA; Giles Semper, Deputy CEO, Better Bankside; Ashok Sinha, Chief Executive, London Cycling Campaign and Sarah Walton, Assistant Director, Cross River Partnership.
This competition forms part of Better Bankside’s ‘Smart Green Business’ Strategy; a project that involves working with member businesses to improve their environmental performance. This currently includes a free recycling scheme, public realm improvements and information events, as well as actively promoting cycling for commuting and work related trips though its Travel Planning programme.
The issue of cycle parking has been high on the agenda of Better Bankside for the last few years. Data from the Bankside Employee Travel Survey 2010 indicate that up to 17% of trips made to Bankside on a regular basis are by bicycle. Discussion with member businesses has highlighted the problem of finding space for cycle parking, particularly when premises are leased or in older buildings. Better Bankside has therefore set a target to establish a secure cycle park in the western end of the BID area by March 2011.
Giles Semper, Deputy CEO, Better Bankside said: ‘We were thrilled by the quality of all the schemes, particularly those that reached the shortlist. And we were right behind the decision to make Studio Meda the winner. Their elegant scheme – for which the title ‘shed’ seems somewhat demeaning – can work for both visitors & local employees, and can comfortably sit alongside the best of Bankside’s architecture. It is now our intention to identify a site and work with partners to implement a prototype as soon as we are able.’ Ashok Sinha, Chief Executive, London Cycling Campaign adds: ‘At first glance not looking like a bikeshed at all, this elegant yet economic design by Studio Meda not only provides robust and sheltered cycle parking but does so with an aesthetic that would enable it to hold its own outside any of Bankside’s many statement buildings.’
Deborah Saunt, Director, DSDHA comments: ‘The wide range of entries was really surprising and positively demonstrated the diverse culture of design that takes an active interest in this scale of the designing for the city. We greatly enjoyed the rich imagination of the designs and as a jury we were mindful that practical, robust requirements had to go hand in hand with delight, as well as contributing positively to the urban realm.’
Sarah Walton, Assistant Director, Cross River Partnership says: ‘ I am very excited about the contribution this design will make to the distinctiveness and continued regeneration of the Bankside area.’
