The parking structure has captured the imagination of novelists, photographers and film-makers, and yet it remains peripheral to our culture, best understood as forbidding fictional setting or as an often imposing silent building that we encounter on the way to work or shop.
As you know car park is not very appreciate by users (too cold, too dark too insecure). we think that it will be interesting to bring something new to this type of building that is far too quiet.

We thought about to design a iconic and Alternative Car Park Tower in the Heart of Hong Kong will include a several possibility of events as concerts, art exhibitions, ceremonies dinners, cinematic projections etc.

The architecture of this new building should reflect contemporary design tendencies, standing out for the uniqueness of it car park design, while meshing in with the surrounding Hong Kong urban tissue.

Note: this is an open international competition hosted by [AC-CA] to generate progressive contemporary design ideas. There are no plans for the Alternative Car Park Tower to be built.

INTRODUCTION

The parking structure has captured the imagination of novelists, photographers and film-makers, and yet it remains peripheral to our culture, best understood as forbidding fictional setting or as an often imposing silent building that we encounter along on the way.
Hong Kong situated on China’s south coast and enclosed by the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea, is renowned for its expansive skyline and deep natural harbour. And with a population of seven million people, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

Much of Hong Kong’s terrain is hilly to mountainous with steep slopes of which less than 25% of the territory’s landmass is developed and about 40% of the remaining land area is reserved as country parks and nature reserves.
Car parks are not very appreciate by users (too cold, too dark, too insecure etc..) and this competition hopes to offer a new take on this type of building that is far too quiet.
Ramp, slope, incline, diagonal, acclivity, declivity, scarp, escarp and rise are terms which all describe a condition other than flatness. We find obliquity in topography, as in rail and road, where it may describe a character and is useful when seeking to locate and to orient. The ramp is the result of the wheel, which distinguishes the motion of the car from that of the human body, sets the ramped multi-storey car park apart from other types of building.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The aim of this International competition is to design an iconic and Alternative Car Park Tower in the heart of Hong Kong. The new tower will include several possibilities for events such as concerts, art exhibitions, fashion shows, ceremonies dinners, cinematic projections, etc.
The architecture of this new building should reflect contemporary design tendencies, standing out for its uniqueness as a car park design, while meshing in with the surrounding Hong Kong urban tissue. This competition hopes to achieve the following:
– Encourage and reward design excellence on a large scale, which integrates function, structure, details, etc.
– Research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of designing an original car park incorporating an alternative program.
– To generate the discussion of ideas regarding car park security and all the phobias associated with it such as fear of dark, dirty, cold, etc.
– Encourage the employment of sustainable design in all aspects of the proposal.

COMPETITION STRUCTURE

This is a single stage Competition with the aim of identifying the most appropriate proposal, which best satisfies the general and specific objective of the contest.

SITE SELECTION

The new multi-storey car park will form a new gateway to Hong Kong’s financial centre. The tower will be located on the 1st Connaught Road Central, in front of the AIA central building and not far away from the iconic Bank of China designed by the architect Mr Pei.
The proposed site is used by an existing two-storey car park and it is connected to key transport links and amenities that stimulate and support modern users. The open and calm Chater Gardens is just across from the proposed site, not to mention the MTR Central train station which is just a minute’s walk away, the Star Ferry shortly beyond and nearby is the Airport Express rail link. Note: the existing car park has been omitted which indicate the site is vacant.

Prizes

Winning participants will receive prizes totaling US$ 5,400 with the distribution as follows:

– 1st PRIZE: US$ 3,000 (THREE THOUSAND US DOLLARS)
– 2nd PRIZE: US$ 1,600 (ONE THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED US DOLLARS)
– 3rd PRIZE: US$ 800 (EIGHT HUNDRED US DOLLARS)

There will also be 7 honorable mentions
