Apparently nicknamed by some Cambridge students as the ‘Bread Bin’ this rather stark Foster building contains the ‘relocated’ Squire Law library with generous atrium, five auditoria and offices. Some users of the building initially complained about acoustics and many find the south facade (for one) overbearing and alienating.
The Norman Foster library squares up to (with its point) the James Stirling library to the west: these are two buildings that are quite egotistical; one gets the feeling this building could have been anywhere.

Controversial modern Cambridge building that had probelms with overheating, leaks, falling tiles, etc.
The architectural context : Faculty of History, a world-famous 20th Century structure by the Scottish architect James Stirling. This bold Modern building sadly became controversial due to various building failures.

The Squire Law Library, which occupies the majority of the first, second and third floors of the building, is a dependent library of Cambridge University Library. It contains one of the three largest legal collections in the UK with more than 180,000 volumes. The collection is very strong across UK law, the law of other major common law countries (the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand), and the law of the European Union, France and Germany. There are, additionally, smaller collections for the law of many other countries. The library provides its users with access to many major legal databases.
