Pelio Estate Wine Tasting Pavilion, Carmel Valley, California
For their new 1,900 sq ft tasting room, the two sisters behind Pelio Estate enlisted Hawkins Interiors to transform an old barn and gravel parking lot into an elegant boutique wine tasting venue in the picturesque Carmel Valley, CA. The project’s challenge was to enhance the guest experience without altering the barn’s original square footage or volume, as local restrictions prohibited such changes. The solution lay in opening the barn structure to a newly designed garden, allowing for a more expansive guest experience without increasing the building’s footprint.
Inside, the design team chose a minimalist approach, incorporating simple forms, natural textures, and materials that create a moody, refined ambiance. Plastered walls and polished concrete floors contrast with the warmth of custom stained wood ceilings and cabinets made of shou sugi ban charred wood. A central fireplace and seating area make the space feel cozy and welcoming, much like a home, encouraging visitors to relax and enjoy their wine. Adjacent to the fireplace is the tasting bar, supported by striking concrete pillars and topped with a live-edge reclaimed wood bar. A custom bronzed, etched mirror adds dramatic flair to the bar backdrop. Opposite, a live-edge wood dining table, illuminated by bone-colored pendant lights by Pinch, offers seating for up to 12 guests with unobstructed views of the garden.
The exterior maintains the natural aesthetic, with hewn wood siding and a custom trellis draped in canvas, serving as both shade and a dramatic entrance. Metal and wood trellises provide intimate areas for group tastings, and a locally-sourced stone fire pit, paired with antique olive trees, completes the outdoor experience. The design blends interior and exterior spaces effortlessly, making the most of Carmel Valley’s Mediterranean climate, creating an inviting and cohesive environment for guests to savor their wine.
