ENfold pavilion Boston
ENfold a 500′ glowing ribbon in Frederick Law Olmsted’s Evan’s Way Park, directly across from the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum, is currently under construction. The installation has already been recognized by the Boston Society of Architects, as it has been nominated to receive an 2013 Unbuilt Architecture Award.
This temporary installation was commissioned by the Fenway Alliance to commemorate the designation of the Fenway as Boston’s first state-wide Cultural District. The Fenway Alliance – the designated manager of the District – includes twenty-two institutions in the Fenway area, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Gardner Museum, and the Berklee College of Music. ENfold is a translucent ribbon that stretches across the park and derives its form from the graceful canopy of trees that cover the park.
ENfold will serve as an interactive backdrop to support formal – and informal – programming for the greater Fenway Community during September and October of 2012. It will be a key component of a youth arts program at the Alliance’s annual Opening Our Doors event. ENfold will also act as an imaginative frame for musical performances including a Brazilian drumming band, a tai chi exhibition, and a plethora of other artistic experiences. As the Fenway “opens its doors” to the entire extended community, the installation will gently embrace its visiting creators inspiring new experiences with both nature and the arts.
The installation includes a porous fabric of light-weight debris netting including sections that can be woven with strips for children to create a large-scale artwork designed by art educators from the adjacent institutions. Official construction will take place during the last two weeks of September based on an analysis of the on-site trees and other site conditions. An understanding of prevailing wind direction and speed helped generate a fastening system that protects tree bark and other delicate plant material.
