Dudley Square Police Station Building
Project Description
Dudley Square, known as the “other downtown” at the beginning of the twentieth century, is in the process of urban revitalization initiated by the removal of the elevated train. The new police station, located on a prominent site at the heart of the square, is the anchor for future development in the area and the first LEED Gold certified building built by the City of Boston.
The building, a three-story limestone-clad structure with a glass entry corner facing onto a triangular green, responds in scale and material to the civic buildings in the neighborhood The glass tower of the public lobby and double-height community room create a clear reading of the public entry and impart a sense of welcome and arrival to the station.
The internal organization of the building reflects the new mission of the Boston Police Department: to provide a safe and durable building with high community interaction. The occupied spaces inside were designed around a central core to maximize natural air flow, daylight and views. On the first floor, the spaces are layered from public to private: public lobby, police operations, booking, and the cell block. The community room and other community-related offices are located on the second floor in the bay of the entry corner, providing easy access for the public while limiting access to secure areas. The third floor is devoted to staff services, comprising a locker room and physical fitness rooms for the police officers.
All of the office spaces allow for maximum flexibility, and the detectives’ area overlooks a green roof, decreasing storm water runoff from the site. In addition the City of Boston’s many departments, the project was approved by the Dudley Square Vision Task Force and Roxbury Oversight Committee.
