Architect sought by Foreign and Commonwealth Office to design new Ambassador’s Residence at the British Embassy in Beijing
Wednesday 10 July 2019 – RIBA Competitions is pleased to announce the launch of a Competitive Interview process on behalf of the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). The process seeks to select a practice to design a new Ambassador’s Residence at the British Embassy site in Beijing.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have singled out the Ambassador’s Residence as an opportunity to showcase a design that fully reflects Britain and its values and therefore seek a practice of the highest calibre to develop the concept and then work in collaboration with the overall project team during the delivery phase.
The aim of this project is to design a modern, seismically resilient Residence which complies with the appropriate building codes (UK and Chinese) and provides a platform for the Ambassador to project Britain’s global influence.
In the first instance, Expressions of Interest (EOI) are invited in accordance with the requirements set out in a Selection Questionnaire (SQ). Details of how to obtain the SQ together with supporting information are contained within a Briefing Paper available from www.architecture.com/Competitions.
Tony Whitehead, Director of Estates at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said: “Upgrading our Residence has been a long time in the planning, and I hope this competition generates an exciting array of architectural designs that will help the UK stand out in China.”
Up to a maximum of five teams will be shortlisted and invited to participate in the next phase, which will include an outline of their design approach and an interview/presentation with the Evaluation Panel.
The Architect Adviser for this competition is David Morley and the deadline for receipt of SQ returns is 14.00hrs (BST) on Thursday 8 August 2019.
