World Architecture Festival 2010 – Major Themes

Transformations architecture as alchemy and Barcelona city’s transformation are some of the major attractions at the world’s biggest architectural event, World Architecture Festival, which gets underway at the start of November in Barcelona.

–Transformations
The Festival’s thematic exhibition and seminar programme will be based around the theme of ‘Transformations’ and will relate to the way in which the built environment can be transformed by a combination of client commitment, architectural imagination, technological development and professional teamwork.

Exhibition
– The 2010 World Architecture Festival thematic exhibition uses casestudies from around the world to illustrate different aspects of transformation, including: creative re-use and adaptation, regeneration, technology transfer, climate – change initiatives, social change, economic growth.

– The exhibition will include filmed interviews with participants, who will also contribute to the Festival seminar programme.

Super jury announced for World Architecture Festival

Leading international architects assembled to judge the
World Building of the Year 2010

The World Architecture Festival has confirmed the leading international judges that will form the ‘super jury’ to determine which building from across the globe will be crowned ‘World Building of the Year 2010’, at the World Architecture Festival Awards in Barcelona 3rd – 5th November.

Arata Isozaki, one of the most influential architects practicing today, whose work blends Eastern architectural style with emerging global trends, will lead the super-jury of five architectural experts – Barry Bergdoll, Benedetta Tagliabue, Enrique Norten and Hanif Kara – who will cast the deciding vote on the ‘World Building of the Year’ during the grand finale.

Paul Finch, WAF Programme Director, said: “No other event offers architects around the world this type of inspiration and stimulation, which helps shape the future of the industry through best practice exchange and collaboration. We’re delighted to announce an international super jury of such calibre, whose expertise will help identify those projects that are truly exceptional.”

Joining Arata Isozaki will be Barry Bergdoll, from the USA, who is the Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and professor of architectural history in the department of Art History and Archaeology at Colombia University.

Benedetta Tagliabue from the Barcelona based Miralles/Tagliabue EMBT studio, whose work has included a number of high-profile buildings and projects in Barcelona as well as projects across Europe will also join this year’s expert panel.

From the Southern Hemisphere, Mexican born Enrique Norten, who in 1986 founded TEN Arquitectos, and has lectured all over the world, will be joining the panel and adding WAF Super Jury member to his long list of monikers

London based structural engineer Hanif Kara will also join the jurors. He founded Adams Kara Taylor, a structural engineering practice with a ‘design led’ approach that has led to him working on award-winning and unique projects. He was also the first structural engineer to be appointed as a commissioner for the UK’s architectural watchdog CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) in 2008 and is a visiting lecturer at both Harvard and Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (KTH) in Sweden.

Unsung local buildings will take on internationally acclaimed projects at the world’s biggest architecture contest – the World Architecture Festival Awards 2010. Over 200 projects from 55 countries will go head to head at the Festival as architects present their work in front of leading industry judges and a live public audience.

Buildings by internationally renowned architects such as Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, Will Alsop at RMJM, and Terry Farrell & Partners (Farrells), as well as smaller practices are represented among the shortlisted projects. The 15 category winners in the Building of the Year Award will go forward to compete in front of the ‘super-jury’.

The WAF Awards will be held during World Architecture Festival, which takes place in Barcelona at the Centre Convencions International Barcelona (CCIB) from 3rd to 5th November 2010.

In addition to the 15 accolades presented for World Building of the Year, this year’s Awards will feature three alternative categories – Interiors and Fit-out, Structural Design and Future Projects, which celebrates excellence in the early stages of the design process.

A series of keynote addresses, seminars, exhibitions and presentations will run alongside the main awards programme, and every shortlisted project will feature in a grand exhibition during the festival in Barcelona.

The annual event will take place in Barcelona, Spain from 3rd to 5th November 2010 at the Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona (CCIB), and features the world’s biggest architectural contest – The World Architectural Festival Awards.

Unsung local buildings will take on internationally acclaimed projects as the shortlisted architects present their schemes live to the public as well as an international star studded judging panel as they compete for the ultimate accolade of World Building of the Year 2010.

Over 235 projects hail from 55 different countries including emerging markets such as Slovenia, which are represented alongside countries such as Australia, USA, UK, Germany and Scandinavia, which all have strong representation on the shortlist.

A jury of distinguished architects and renowned industry figures will judge the awards. Confirmed jurors for this year include Arata Isozaki, Barry Bergdoll, Enrique Norten, Hanif Kara, Manfredi Nicolette, John Patkaw, and Sir Peter Cook.

In addition to the 15 categories in the World Building of the Year, for buildings completed in the last year, three further sections include Interiors and Fit-out, Structural Design and Future Projects, which celebrates excellence in design for projects still on the drawing board.
