Lucy Spencer of Interior ID said “It was certainly rewarding to be part of the judging panel for Interior surfaces this year. I was particularly impressed by the level of creativity and the truly stunning use of materials and craftsmanship in often challenging projects.”
The entries stimulated much discussion amongst the judges who were delighted by the wide variety and the international flavour of the entries. Projects and designers from the USA, China, Japan and the UAE are among the finalists. The key trends emerging from the strongest entries included the creative use of natural organic materials, a delight in craftsmanship, retro themed designs and an imaginative use of light and light technology.

This year saw the introduction of the new ‘Light and Surfaces’ category, dedicated to light, surfaces and the importance of innovation in the field. “Until now most designers considered light and surfaces separately” said Sharon Stammers of Light Collective. “This year’s entries show that at last they are beginning to consider them together”. Renee Mascari of KBB National Training Group said “We need to inspire to educate, and the finalists are without doubt inspiring. Through these awards, Surface Design Show is supporting innovation in the industry”.

These international awards are open to architects, interior designers and contractors who have completed projects using exterior and interior surface materials in new, innovative and creative ways. The judging will be chaired by Will Alsop, All Worldwide and Vanessa Brady, Society of British Interior Design (SBID) and will also include a panel of six distinguished architects and interior designers.
Brady said that an award for the best in surface design was long overdue. “Last year there was an overwhelming response and the flood of high calibre entries was thrilling. There was no doubt that the industry was crying out for an award of this nature. There is an extraordinary amount of innovation in surfaces, much of it unsung, and the awards provide a unique and dazzling showcase of the very best.”
The deadline for submissions is 20th September 2013 and the winners will be announced at the Surface Design Show on the 6th February 2014.
Christopher Newton of the Surface Design Show said last year’s winners embody the ambition for the Surface Design Awards to become an international showcase of trailblazing design and innovation.
