2016 Architecture winner: two homes in Oropesa by Paredes Pedrosa studio
ASCER (the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers’ Association) invites entries for the 16th edition of the Tile of Spain Architecture, Interior Design and Final Degree Project Awards. Projects can be located anywhere in the world, but must make significant use of Spanish ceramics and must have been completed between January 2015 and October 2017.
After many years of encouraging, discovering and rewarding the creative use of Spanish tiles, the Awards have built a respected reputation within the industry. After 15 years, this latest edition enjoys a refreshed identity, adopting a more contemporary image in line with the current design language. The website has also been completely rebuilt and relaunched with a promotional video that has also been shared widely on social media.
The panel of judges is made up of internationally-acclaimed professionals working in the architecture and design sectors. Established to foster and promote the appreciation of Spanish ceramic tiles in architecture and interior design (both in Spain and internationally), the Tile of Spain Awards are sponsored by Endesa, Vodafone, Port Authority of Valencia and CESCE. Full details of the XVI Tile of Spain Awards are available at the dedicated website www.tileofspainawards.com
Spanish architect Iñaki Ábalos (chairman for the 16th edition) is the founder of the international studio of architecture Abalos + Sentkiewicz. His extensive professional career also includes significant experience in education (he is currently Professor at ETSAM and resident professor and Chair of Department of Architecture at the GSD of Harvard, where ASCER has a collaboration through the Network of Ceramic Chairs.)
The panel of judges also includes Ángela García de Paredes (Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos); Víctor Navarro (Langarita-Navarro); Bak Gordon, Portuguese architect; Moisés Puente (2G’s editor); designer Martín Azúa and Ramón Monfort, from Castellón Architects Professional Association.
2016 Interior Design winner: the TABA espazioa gastro space by Ibon Salaberria in San Sebastian
The Awards have a prize fund of 39.000 euros distributed among three categories. The two main categories are Architecture and Interior Design, each with a cash prize of 17.000 euros. The primary entry requirement is that each project must feature ceramic tiles manufactured in Spain. The third category is the Final Degree Project, aimed at students of Architecture and offering a cash prize of 5.000 euros. The panel of judges may also award two special mentions in each category.
In last year’s awards, the prize for the architecture category went to a renovation project for two homes in Oropesa (Toledo) by the Paredes Pedrosa studio. The TABA espazioa ‘gastro space’ by Ibon Salaberria at the Tabakalera Culture Centre in San Sebastian received the Interior Design award. In the Final Degree Project category, ‘In Situ’ by M Wesam Al Asali from the University of Cambridge was awarded first prize.
