USA design talent triumphs in international awards with practices scooping one third of all prizes

Big Urban Projects Winner – The Hydroelectric Canal, Boston, USA by Paul Lukez Architecture for BSA

In a strong year for showcasing North American design talent, four US based architecture practices including Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates with Adamson Associates, Paul Lukez Architecture and SO – IL + Laisné Roussel have all achieved category wins in the annual MIPIM/The Architectural Review Future Project Awards, and one has also taken the Overall Winner prize.

In combination, US practices took one third of all winning prizes between them across a total of eleven categories and one special prize, with other US studios receiving commendations for their projects. The annual competition celebrates the best of unbuilt, on the drawing board, under construction or currently in planning architecture.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s Shanghai Old Town Masterplan for Shanghai Planning Bureau triumphed in the Regeneration and Masterplanning category. This 1.6 million sqm competition winning masterplan for run down district currently being encroached by culturally insensitive development utilises contextual preservation, sensitively designed new development, targeted public investments, and land use changes to produce a prosperous future which preserves the essential elements of the Old Town. The project was also named Overall Winner during the awards ceremony on Wednesday evening.

The jury was pleased that “the masterplan remembers the significance of some of its historical assets. It seems to incorporate all the best remedies to preserve these and give them a new life.”

Meanwhile, 390 Madison Avenue, New York City, by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates with Adamson Associates for L&L Holding Company won the prize in the Old and New category. This currently under construction 83,000 sqm project will dramatically transform and modernise an outmoded 1950’s office building in the heart of New York City’s midtown corridor. A surgical re-massing and configuration has enabled the provision of modern workspace without sacrificing valuable area.

The jury was impressed by the way the project “retains most of a 1950s commercial building, via ingenious structural and construction techniques. This adds significantly in a way that could set a precedent for sustainable urban densification.”

An ambitious concept for a Hydroelectric Canal in Boston by Paul Lukez Architecture for BSA took away the Big Urban Projects prize. The proposal harnesses clean energy through hydropower generation from tidal changes and storm surges in low-lying urban areas, as a means of shaping economically and environmentally resilient, self-sustaining communities. It also includes an array of integrated landscaping, ecological restoration, urban development and financing strategies for achieving this goal.

“This proposal….links ways of dealing with energy and flooding into a convincing overall proposition with social dimensions such as mixed housing and employment”, remarked the jury.

Finally, SO – IL + Laisné Roussel received the Mixed Use award for L’atelier de l’Arsenal, an innovative masterplan strategy to reinvent the Seine selected in competition by client REI Habitat. The 5,600 (gross) sqm concept is anchored by a mixed-use development to transform an underused site at the junction of Canal Saint-Martin and the Seine River into a new social node for the city. The

proposal features new public spaces, a seven-story wood structure with co-living and social housing and a timber building that accommodates public facilities.

The judges noted that the proposition “…has a convincing urban strategy, especially in the use of water infrastructure that incorporates environmentally friendly construction with a variety of social uses.”

US architects also saw a number of commended projects this year, including L’Occitanie Tower in Toulouse, France by Studio Libeskind for Compagnie de Phalsbourg in the Mixed Use category, and Folsom Bay Tower, San Francisco, USA by Studio Gang for Tishman Speyer in the Tall Buildings category.

This year’s MIPIM/The Architectural Review Future Project Awards are showcasing a total of 33 winning and commended projects from all over the world, submitted by a truly international roll call of architectural practices from Australia, Austria, China, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Netherlands, Qatar, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States.

This year’s international jury is chaired by Paul Finch, Director, World Architecture Festival and included Christina Seilern, Founder, Studio Seilern Architects; Peter Stewart, Architect and principal, Peter Stewart Consultancy; and writer Jeremy Melvin.

2018 marks the 17th consecutive year of the popular awards programme, which is focused exclusively on design excellence in unbuilt or incomplete projects. The competition provides an opportunity to showcase innovative and outstanding architecture that has successfully responded to the development brief, and has fully considered the impact and contribution these projects will make on the communities around them.

The gala awards ceremony takes place during MIPIM, the annual global property market in Cannes. All award entries are included in the celebratory MIPIM/The Architectural Review Future Project Awards catalogue, which is distributed to all MIPIM delegates.
