Extension Mozarteum
The architectural office BERGER + PARKKINEN has been commissioned with the Extension Mozarteum design and planning of the new institute building of the Mozarteum University at the Kurgarten in Salzburg.
The building, now renamed UMAK (University Mozarteum am Kurgarten), is located in the immediate vicinity of the Paracelsus Bad & Kurhaus, which was also planned by BERGER + PARKKINEN and opened in 2019. Thanks to their clear, identity-creating architectural language, the two houses will form a focal point in the historic core of the city of Salzburg.
The student use in conjunction with the visitor flows of the Bath and Kurhaus will bring about a sustainable revival of the northwestern area in the spa garden. In their design, the architects pay particular attention to the morphology of the spa garden with the former fortification and to the accentuation of the open spaces. The main idea of the design is to make the transition from the baroque complex of Schloss Mirabell to the Wilhelminian Markus-Sittikus-Straße tangible.
The Location
The basic considerations for the integration of the Mozarteum at the Kurgarten into the urban space go beyond the boundaries of the property and consider the potential of the entire area of the inner-city parks Kurgarten, Zwergerlgarten and Mirabellgarten, at the southwest of which the headquarters of the Mozarteum University is located. The UMAK is part of an urban design that strives for an interweaving of the heterogeneous structures from the Baroque, Wilhelminian period and 20th century as well as for the mediation between the spa garden and streets.
For this purpose, the UMAK is divided into two buildings, which mediate in cascading height and size between the closed development on Auerspergstraße and the open structure of Schwarzstraße. The new building will be accessed like the Paracelsus Bad & Kurhaus from the new entrance square on the corner of Schwarzstraße and Auerspergstraße.
The Interior
Appropriate for use as a university building, the ground floor of the building presents itself as open to the public. The heart of the building is the hall with natural skylight, which reaches up to the top floor. The division of the house into two buildings allows the large halls and practice rooms to be accommodated with special room heights. The mighty cantilever of the upper floors above the entrance area emphasizes the importance of the square in front of it and provides a view of the neighboring Paracelsus Bad & Kurhaus.
The Façade
The FAÇade system of the UMAK also consists of curtained, ceramic façade panels to underline the ensemble effect. In contrast to the façade on the bathroom with open slats, however, the UMAK uses a closed, ventilated ceramic façade.
The development of this façade is an expression of the special use of the building as a music institute, with the specific requirements for daylight and sound insulation: naturally exposed individual rooms with window ventilation, halls with glazing, studios without daylight. The ceramic slats of the bathhouse are quoted in material, color and proportion. However, these are closed at UMAK; only the large glazing of the ensemble rooms is protected from sunlight by fixed vertical slats. To illuminate the individual rooms, a uniform, standing window format with integrated sun and glare protection is being developed. The entrance area and the joint between the two buildings are glazed.
Despite complex technical requirements for the building, attention was paid to the sustainable flexibility in the use of the house during the planning in order to enable later “shifts” in terms of the use of the areas. In addition, the pronounced compactness of the two buildings with their favorable envelope area ratio supports the sustainability of the new building in thermal terms.
