Construction of the Hunter Medical Research Institute’s new facilities is officially underway, with a ceremony marking the occasion.
The Hunter Medical Research Institute is internationally renowned for its influential work improving human health and wellbeing. Its research programs are making significant discoveries in effective diagnostic, treatment and preventative measures – resulting in changes to the way health care is delivered in Australia and overseas.

The $90-million, 16,000 square metre building is being constructed on the Rankin Park campus adjacent to John Hunter Hospital. The facility will accommodate 450 medical researchers across five research divisions, and HMRI’s administration operations.
S2F and Denton Corker Marshall are the principal architects in association.
A 50-year time capsule was sealed by the Federal Member for Charlton, Mr Greg Combet, and HMRI Director Professor Maree Gleeson at the commencement ceremony on August 10.
The HMRI will include:
– Flow cytometry facility
– Confocal microscopy
– Molecular genetics
– Mass spectrometry (proteomics)
– Central cell culture facility
– New centralised bioresources facility – dedicated SPF facility
– Histology suite
