Fernberg House, Australia
Nestled atop an elevated site in Paddington, Fernberg is a contemporary family home aspiring to seek a balance between private retreat and outdoor living. Fernberg House is crafted from a robust and natural palette of materials, the home is warm and inviting with expansive openings to uninterrupted city views, and seamlessly integrated landscaping.
How is the project unique?
A distinguishing feature of Fernberg is its innovative use of layered materials, and integrated landscaping, visible in both its exterior and interior spaces. The home’s facade, built with natural stone, plank-form concrete, timber, and copper, creates a tactile environment with exposed structural concrete elements, while seamlessly integrating landscaping planters across the levels to connect the structure with its leafy Paddington surroundings. The successful integration of these materials and spaces attests to the collaborative efforts of architects, engineers, landscapers, and builders, who developed innovative solutions to overcome complex structural elements.
What is the conceptual framework of the project?
Fernberg aims to provide a comfortable and functional family home while meeting their love for entertaining and outdoor living. Positioned to capture key city views to the East, the house sits perched on an elevated site within the surrounding landscape. Integration with the landscape was considered a critical design driver to successfully integrate the house and garden and celebrate outdoor living.
Contemporary concrete forms and metal surfaces provide a textural contrast of robust finishes externally, while natural stones and timbers create a beautifully warm and calming refuge within. Geometric forms are thoughtfully positioned above a solid base, articulated with a layering of materials connected by integrated landscaping. The main living areas for entertaining are designed to flow seamlessly outdoors to the balcony, connecting to the immediate and distant landscapes.
A more intimately proportioned second living space offers a family gathering place and serves as a refuge for the kids as they grow older, equipping the home for long-term habitation and enjoyment. Entertainment spaces on the lowest level provide ample spaces for activities, catering to the interests and pursuits of all family members, embracing the concept that a building should not only meet their needs but also inspire and delight them.
What was the brief?
The design of the family home incorporated the clients’ desire to celebrate the city views, with a focus on both entertainment spaces, and areas for relaxation and refuge to support the changing needs of the family over time. The brief required the creation of several living spaces to serve the family’s needs including outdoor living spaces, communal areas to gather, and private retreats for both parents and children. All living spaces have a seamless connection to the outdoors, providing beautiful views of the city and the landscape fulfilling the client’s wishes.
