Haisheng Xu: Practice in The Complexity of Institutional Architectural Design

Nowadays, design is influenced by the parallel evolution of human needs and technology. These two factors together intensify the complexity of architecture. The practice of Haisheng Xu examines architecture’s response to increasingly complex patterns of living and shifting social structures. His interests range from spatial organization to urban relationships, while simultaneously rethinking design methodologies and tools as integral components of architectural innovation.

Haisheng Xu is a Los Angeles–based architectural designer, graduated from the School of Architecture at South China University of Technology, and later received his Master of Architecture degree from Washington University in St. Louis. At Yazdani Studio of CannonDesign, one of the most influential design firms based in Los Angeles, he has played a critical role in the design of several major projects in recent years. His practice spans projects of various scales, with a primary focus on institutional architecture, including academic facilities, healthcare environments, and campus residential projects. Leveraging advanced computational methodologies and emerging technologies, he focuses on expanding the possibilities for innovative design in complex, large-scale projects. His experience includes the Resnick Sustainability Center at the California Institute of Technology and the AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion at the University of Chicago, among others. These works explore new frontiers in sustainable development, healthcare environments, and academic spaces design, contributing to ongoing discourse within institutional and healthcare architecture. The scale and systemic complexity of these projects present significant challenges in design and information management. In response to these challenges, Xu has been committed to integrating design thinking with technological innovation, establishing foundations and expanding possibilities for architectural advancement, from which he has begun to explore innovation in complex institutional and public projects.

The exploration extends into his personal research and practice. In the design of the Iceland Volcano Visitor Center, the project investigated how to derive an architectural language from contexts. The design responds to the dynamic forces of volcanic activity through fluid and expressive forms, while carefully preserving the integrity of the site and promoting sustainable strategies. Parametric tools were employed to control and refine the complex geometry, enabling both formal development and design optimization.

The project also considers how natural forms can shape architectural language with artificial intelligence. Using AI-driven tools, the interior spaces were developed by drawing inspiration from the volcanic landscape, creating a connection between contemporary expression and the local environment. This approach enabled broader design exploration and more informed, refined design decisions.

Another project that reflects how evolving design methods and tools can support complex work is the Brise-Vent Harbor Museum in Le Havre, France. Designed by Haisheng and his team at LYT-X Studio, the project brings together the city’s historical context and a contemporary architectural expression. The complexity of the design arose from the layered historical and social conditions of the site, along with the ambition to integrate ideas across different scales into a clear, cohesive language. Advanced technologies were introduced not as formal gestures, but as practical tools to develop the design logic and respond to the changing environmental and sustainability demands of the built context.

As one of the design leaders, Xu led the parametric employment process to generate a fluid architectural form that transitions seamlessly from exterior to interior, echoing the site’s maritime landscape and industrial heritage. The museum integrates exhibition and educational functions and is carefully embedded within the public waterfront, reflecting a synthesis of technology, spatial expression, and functional performance.

The project has received international recognition and was selected for exhibitions such as NYC Design’s Re-Craft exhibition in New York, which highlights global innovation in sustainable strategies and design, particularly the redefinition of form and the evolving role of technology in sustainable architecture.

Xu’s professional trajectory reflects a central condition of contemporary architecture, the growing need to navigate complex, interconnected challenges arising from social transformation, technological advancement, and sustainability imperatives. Architecture today, particularly large-scale, complex institutional and public buildings, is no longer confined to formal expression alone; it must also respond to shifting societal needs while rapidly integrating evolving technological advancements. Through his work in large-scale institutional, healthcare, and cultural architecture, Xu has explored innovative approaches that align design thinking with idea creation, project execution, building performance, and long-term environmental responsibility. In his approaches, new methodologies and advanced design tools are not merely instruments of production but critical catalysts that reshape how architecture is conceived and delivered.

Social and technological advancement will continue to redefine the conditions of living and building. Examining how these forces influence the creation of architecture will be central to the discipline’s evolution.
