Matt’s Place ALS Home, WA
The Miller Hull Partnership has partnered with Matt’s Place Foundation to create a home designed specifically for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients. This prefabricated, modular, mass timber prototype addresses the unique challenges of ALS patients and their families. Founded by former marine Matthew Wild, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2015, Matt’s Place Foundation is dedicated to maintaining dignity for ALS sufferers by offering housing solutions that prioritize accessibility, independence, and family living.
Miller Hull collaborated with leaders in prefabrication, engineering, and mass timber production, donating their services to develop Matt’s Place 2.0 (MP 2.0). While the original MP 1.0 was built using conventional materials in Coeur d’Alene, ID, the need for a more scalable and cost-effective solution was evident. Miller Hull’s design team overcame this challenge by creating prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) units that allow for flexible configurations across different sites. These units feature integrated joints for weatherproofing, wiring, and plumbing, creating an accessible, seamless interior with ample wheelchair clearance.

MP 2.0 includes a ground-floor suite for patients, featuring a bedroom, living room, bathroom, and kitchen, while two upstairs bedrooms serve family members or caregivers. The L-shaped design creates a weather-protected carport, facilitating an easy transition from vehicle to wheelchair. A flat outdoor deck and garden promote time spent outdoors, with large windows ensuring plenty of natural light.
The home is equipped with smart technology tailored to ALS patients, such as eye-movement-controlled systems. MP 2.0 represents a breakthrough in accessible design and construction. Building on this success, Miller Hull is planning MP 3.0, a three-story apartment complex next door. This partnership between Miller Hull and Matt’s Place Foundation continues to innovate for ALS patients across the Pacific Northwest.
