Hotel and Private Club
Design of an exclusive Hotel and Private Club on a prime site in Hollywood that will create a new landmark building. The 12,000sqm proposal includes lounges, cinemas, screening rooms as well as landscaped garden, three destination restaurants, spa, fitness facilities and 80 guest suites.
The project is composed of three 12 and 11 storey intersecting cylinders clad in bronze and glass to form the hotel and club accommodation with spectacular views over the city. The tower rests upon a limestone plinth topped by a landscaped garden and pool area.
The brief included a members-only club with private and public restaurants, hotel accommodation as well as screening rooms, spa and outdoor space that would enjoy magnificent views over the city making the most of the benign weather that Los Angeles has to offer most of the year.
Our concept was to create a unique architectural experience where each of these functions was differentiated by dramatic spaces that were carefully woven together and reflected the laid-back Britishness that is the signature of the club. Taking inspiration from the 19th century clubs where the architectural procession leads from the outside world to the panelled comfort of the lounge, we scaled each of the experiences up to allow for more generous proportions in the reception, guest lounges and member’s areas.
The ground and lower ground floors house the hotel reception, all-day brasserie, screening rooms, bowling alley, day spa well as cigar lounge and fountain bar area facing the entrance courtyard. The landscaped third floor houses outdoor dining areas, croquet and bowling lawns with garden terraces and a pool with 180-degree views over the city and San Gabriel Mountains to the North between tree covered terraces.
The base building is designed as a travertine stone plinth with bronze anodised window frames. The upper storeys complemented these materials with bronze anodised framing and low emissivity glass with oak internal louvers for lighting and privacy. A warm palette of materials that would be robust yet age gracefully like the best of British design.
The tower is composed of three interlocking circular plans that house eleven storeys of suites with views out over Los Angeles, each level has bespoke layouts and wet rooms. The uppermost two floors house the members club for private dining, a restaurant, two bars and a pool deck that is oriented towards the Pacific.
The design concept was tested for seismic integrity and was shown to offer many advantages through the use of a shear wall core that in combination with the structural external skin reduced stresses to the building fabric.
