Aberdeen City Council has approved the transformation of Broad Street into a ‘pedestrian priority’ route extending Union Street to the Gallowgate/Upper Kirkgate junction.

This will see a number of streetscape improvements carried out including a water feature, raised planters, tree planting and seating with traffic restricted to buses only.

Informal pedestrian crossing points will be denoted by tactile paving in contrasting materials to allow use by the visually impaired. As part of this work improvements will be made to lighting at Marischal College and capacity will be factored in to convert the route into a venue for programmed events throughout the year.

Aberdeen City Council stated: “The plans include the shared pedestrian/cycle pavement extending towards Union Street with the existing Caithness paving, the traffic lights at Upperkirkgate and Gallowgate to be removed and replaced with a shared surface for vehicles and a roundel (a mini-roundabout with a road surface feature that indicates roundabout driving rules apply and pedestrians are given priority), and a Toucan crossing (pedestrian/cycle crossing) created at the Union Street/Broad Street junction.”

The Broad Street project forms part of the City Centre Masterplan and is being funded through a developer obligation of Muse, who are currently delivering the mixed use Marischal Square project.

Work is expected to get underway in February 2017 for an August completion.

Plans for £107m for Aberdeen city development unveiled, reports the BBC.

New plans for a £107m development in Aberdeen city centre have been unveiled by developers.

The designs will replace the former council headquarters at St Nicholas House with an office, hotel and retail complex known as Marischal Square.

Muse Developments say the plans are in keeping with the Granite City’s existing architecture.

The architects are Halliday Fraser Munro, based in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Belfast. HFM were involved in plans to renew Union Street Gardens, both before and after the international architecture competition.

The plans for Marischal Square include:

• 175,000 sq ft of offices with 250 associated car spaces
• 125 bed four-star hotel
• 14,500 sq ft of civic space in front of Provost Skene’s House
• 42,900 sq ft of civic space on Broad Street between Marischal College and the Marischal Square site (one and a half times the size of Castlegate)
• Full pedestrianisation of this section of Broad Street
• A mixture of granite and glass in the elevations

Aberdeen City Council has selected Muse Developments to redevelop the site which previously housed the local authority’s corporate headquarters. The developer is one of the UK’s leading names in commercial development and urban regeneration, reports STV.

The new development will house offices, a boutique hotel, cafes, restaurants and shops, as well as creating a significant amount of public space and pedestrianising Broad Street.

The historic Provost Skene’s House is also included in the proposals and there are plans to create a garden area, which will be known as Marischal Square.

The Marischal Square site states on 4th April 2014:
“Urban regeneration and property specialist Muse Developments will be submitting a full planning application for the project which will transform the former St. Nicholas House site and include a greater prominence for the 469-year-old Provost Skene’s House.

With demolition work continuing on site, Muse and Aberdeen City Council have also reacted positively to the comments made by the 2,500 people who participated in the two rounds of consultation exhibitions in the city during October, November and December last year by reviewing the site plan for the development in terms of the mix of commercial and civic space.”

The current Muse proposal is for a development comprising linked buildings, the tallest of which will be 10 storeys from the level at Flourmill Lane, compared to St Nicholas House which is 15 storeys from that elevation.
