LAVA celebrates Lunar New Year with new projects in Vietnam
LAVA director Chris Bosse said: “We have recently won two international competitions – for a mixed-use development Tien Bo City and the Detech company headquarters. And we’re designing a residential/office tower in Van Phu, an experiential tea shop, and, with our HCMC-based design partner Module K, a series of kindergartens.”
The Tien Bo City project reinterprets the unique Hanoi streetscape and Vietnamese landscape into a contemporary green, light and airy development. It’s a mix of five-star hotel, commercial and residential in a city-block-sized complex in the centre of Hanoi, a new place for people that connects old and new.
Three low-rise buildings cascade down to a public space preserving an historic printing factory, a century-old pagoda and a banyan tree. The building design references the various scales of Hanoi old town (including famous ‘tube’ houses) and the sweeping hills and valleys of Sapa, with staggered rooflines and the multifunctional layering of commercial activities on the ground floor and apartments above, topped by a terrace. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2018.
The headquarters of Detech includes a group of connected towers for a family business including the original building located in a thriving up-and-coming part of Hanoi, the My Dinh district. LAVA interpreted the different business branches of Detech (from environmental projects to motorcycles to biotechnology) as a group of buildings of different appearance and size, yet all connected, like the business itself.
Importantly the ‘oldest family member’, the original Detech Tower, is incorporated into the design as the founding place of the company. LAVA has assembled an international team of experts including German firm Inros Lackner to design the state-of-the-art large scale complex.
EcoKid Kindergarten features an indoor-outdoor playful, safe and fun environment for the next generation of Vietnamese children. LAVA is collaborating with Module K on their first kindergarten project in Vinh, south of Hanoi.
A 5,000 sqm series of buildings create indoor and outdoor spaces that are playful and safe while making an architectural statement. The buildings form three courtyards and playgrounds with a forest in between, with breezes from the adjacent lake adding to the natural experience. World-class interiors will educate, challenge and entertain children.
Van Phu: creating a vertical highrise village with apartments and offices connected by green bridges and views to the Hanoi Lotus Building which sits in 19ha lake located near one of Hanoi’s main arterial roads connecting to Noi Bai Airport.
Dilmah Tea Experience is an interpretation of the undulating landscapes of Sri Lanka in a retail outlet in Hanoi. The design creates an experience and not just a shop, a place to learn about tea within a sensory environment.
“‘The 2018 Year of the Dog’ is bringing some exciting developments for LAVA already with new opportunities to bring our skills, ideas and research to Vietnam,” added Bosse.
“Vietnam has recently experienced a development boom similar to other Asian countries. A lot of the city’s original fabric is being destroyed and replaced by large-scale big-box mono-use towers, usually on a generic podium, with very little respect or relationship to the local context, climate and culture.”
“We are excited to contribute a new perspective, working closely with our local design partners, to address these issues. And to help re-define the architecture, as local themes, such as the Hanoi fine grain old town, the rolling hills and the Vietnamese familial structure, are reflected and respected in the designs.”
Bosse has a long experience Vietnam designing a range of buildings as associate architect at PTW. The most prominent project, City Garden, is in the centre of HCMC and stage 2 is just now nearing completion. The large apartments with resort style facilities and sweeping balconies are particularly popular amongst the growing expat and wealthy middle class community.
LAVA’s new offices in Hanoi and HCMC are servicing the projects over the next three years of design development and construction.
