Collateral Event of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia
The Awards Ceremony of Young Talent Architecture Award (YTAA) was celebrated on 28th September 2021 with a hybrid format online and at Palazzo Michiel in Venice. The award that brings together the best graduation projects from European architecture, urban planning and landscape schools was enriched in this third edition with a parallel Award in Asia.
The 4 Winners of YTAA 2020 and the 3 Winners of the Asian edition of YTAA 2020, announced on 5th October 2020 (see the press release here), yesterday had the opportunity to receive the Award, meet and debate together with jury members, organisers and event partners in the stimulating setting of the Biennale Architettura 2021.
“On behalf of Commissioner Gabriel who could not be with us today, let me say a few words. First on architecture, a considerable force. The spaces in which we live shape our lives. They determine how we connect to each other as well as how we connect to the nature.
As we work to change society for the better, addressing climate change, promoting inclusion and well-being, architecture is fundamental. […] The Young Talent Architecture Award – co-funded by our Creative Europe Programme – recognises this, and more importantly – it puts young people as an integral part in this process. We need young talents like you! The Award enables your ideas to shape the Europe we want to live in. – Mr. Guglielmo di Cola, Member of Cabinet of the EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation, Education, Culture and Youth, European Commission.
Within the framework of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, How will we live together? the Awards Ceremony was preceded by two debates focusing on “Educating together” and “New European Bauhaus: How will we live together?” two key themes in relation to education and how to rethink Europe which prioritises the environment through a cultural project in which design and sustainability are indissociable.
The two panels involved the Winners of YTAA 2020 together with the Winners of Asia Edition of YTAA 2020 and the jury members of both awards. During the first panel, moderated by Oya Atalay Franck, president of EAAE, Minsuk Cho, jury member of the Asia Edition of YTAA 2020, Antonia Ossa and Álvaro Alcázar del Águila, winners of YTAA 2020, Rosario Talevi, jury member YTAA 2020 and Kezala Jere, representing the “The Walls” winners of the Asia Edition of YTAA 2020 had the chance to debate on architecture education in Europe, Chile and Korea.
“The Young Talent Architecture Award is an amazing project. It’s a step in certain biographies but is also about manifesting the quality that matters to us all and matters to everybody who inhabits this planet. We really have to put our best together to create a graceful environment. It’s not just about intimidating problems that we are facing, it’s about a long-term project that we have to really keep an eye on.” – Oya Atalay, president of EAAE.
The second panel, moderated by Anna Ramos, director of Fundació Mies van der Rohe, was held by JiSoo Kim, Winner of the Asia Edition of YTAA 2020, Bet Capdeferro, jury member of YTAA 2020, Monika Marinova and Willem Hubrechts, winners of YTAA 2020 and Oleg Drozdov, jury member of YTAA 2020.
“This has been a journey full of lessons and learnings and I am thankful to jurors and the younger generation that are teaching us so much. This is the end of #YTAA2020, so that means it is the beginning of Young Talent Architecture Award 2023” – Anna Ramos, director of Fundació Mies van der Rohe.
The YTAA Winners are being supported in the creation of a network with the architects and critics involved in the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award.
To support their professional development the Winners have received:
→ a diploma and the catalogue
→ 5.000€ each project
→ a profile in World-Architects.com
→ visibility through the YTAA 2020 exhibition in Venice and universities worldwide
→ participation in events such as the Future Architecture Platform
→ USM furniture to design their workspace

“We were all very much impressed by the level and scope of the submissions and not least by how the students were not afraid to tackle the big issues of climate change migration, not only through long-term projects such as nuclear waste sites but also through sensitive briefs for burial sites and religious worship. Other more straightforward proposals were also decently tackled and robustly researched, beautifully illustrated, showcasing considered solutions.”
Martine de Maeseneer, MDMA, YTAA 2020 chairwoman.
The 4 Winners of YTAA 2020 and the 3 Winners of the Asian edition of YTAA 2020 were announced on 5th October 2020 during an online event gathering the authors, jury members and organisers on the World Architecture Day and World Habitat Day. The recording of the debates is available here:

On 28th September, an event will bring together the 7 Winners and the ten jury members as well as representatives from the organising institutions, sponsors and supporters. The participants will engage in several conversations on some of today’s most talked about topics regarding architecture. The works selected for the exhibition are all excellent examples of the values of the New European Bauhaus, a movement to rethink and replan Europe which prioritises the environment through a cultural project in which design and sustainability are indissociable.
“As a jury we consider YTAA an open platform for discussion in a global and local scale. The selected projects move through different scales and geographical contexts and the question “How will we live together?” is the guiding thread for the development of proposals that operate in a diversity of ways and show how to face academic projects based on dialogue and cooperation, field research in non-hypothetic realities and inclusion of crossdisciplinarity fields.” Momoyo Kaijima, Atelier Bow-Wow, Asia edition of YTAA 2020 chairwoman.
These topics will become the starting point of the event’s dialogues and all the projects will also be published in the YTAA 2020 catalogue that will be presented during the event. All works can be found on http://ytaa.miesbcn.com/archive and by following the relevant social media channels.
