Ukraine rebuild prefabricated modular units
As the war in Ukraine rages on, the cities across the country see massive destruction. In fact, according to the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, around 61M square meters of residential space or over 121,000 buildings have been either fully or partially destroyed.
Ukraine rebuild prefabricated modular units construction:
And while 6 million people have already fled the country, millions more remain trapped in Ukraine and are in urgent need of aid with their cities.
Ukraine prefabricated modular units completion:
With this pressing issue in mind, WZMH Architects and its research and development lab known as ‘sparkbird’ have teamed up with industry partners – Spring Valley Corp, Stephenson Engineering Ltd, Quasar Consulting Group and Argentum – to develop a new solution designed to restore the spaces of life and create communities that are fit for the future.
A rendering of the prefabricated, modular building blocks:
The result is an innovative prefabricated modular precast solution Speedstac for mid- to high-rise residential buildings that addresses the housing crisis in Ukraine and has a potential to reimagine the future of its cities:
- Made of “boxes” that are stacked together, side by side, on top of each other, these prefabricated modular units slide into the existing building and replace damaged sections with new residential units.
- The concrete modules are designedto significantly reduce applied finishes (i.e. gypsum board, carpet, tiles) and include a special ‘sandwich’ layer that eliminates the need for bulkheads.
- The solution resolves common acoustical and fire separation issues with high-strength concrete on all four sides of a unit, while addressing durability and lifecycle. It also features a unique component, a ‘special connector,’ which facilitates the process of stacking buildings together, speeds up the construction times and makes the Speedstac solution cost-effective.
- Having developed more than a dozen concepts and real world products, including the Intelligent Structural Panel, the Black Box(DC based smart building controllers), mySUN(microgrid in a box), Sunrider energy harvesting bike, WZMH and sparkbird will integrate its smart building technologies into new buildings to create more sustainable communities.
The concept has been endorsed by the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, and WZMH – alongside a group of Ukrainian architects, who temporarily relocated to Canada and joined their team – will collaborate with the government authorities in Ukraine and Canada to bring the idea to life.
