Kuum Hotel, Spa & Residences in Bodrum
The KUUM Hotel, Spa & Residences is an innovative concept for boutique lifestyle and resorts. The architecture for KUUM was inspired by the regional beauty, resources and historical legacy of southwestern Turkey and the Aegean Sea. Specifically, the Kuum Property is located in Bodrum, an international destination renowned for its wonderful climate, turquoise waters and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Bodrum is a Mediterranean port-trade settlement in the Southwest of Turkey. The area boasts a rich history of over three thousand years, including Hellenistic times. The venerated scientist Heredot was born there and sculptures by artists including Leochares, Bryaxis, and Timotheos are exhibited there; and can now be found in museum collections around the world.
Kuum was conceived of as a small settlement. Nestled on a seafront bay, the property uniquely coexists within the hillside topography. The clients wanted a design that looked and performed differently than what is normally expected of resorts in Bodrum. Strict building codes also demanded innovative and flexible approaches to design.
Design Strategy:
The project’s aim was to design the complex in harmony with its natural setting to blend and work with the environment. Given complex programmatic requirements, the distribution of building types was a design challenge, solved by using the terrain’s surface as an elastic malleable layer as the project developed. The forms and shapes were molded according to their functions and to capture the magnificent bay views. The entire complex is formulated from the same DNA.
The different building typologies for the resort are organized to serve various programmatic needs creating zones of heterogeneity. The zones were further categorized by public and private areas. To further heighten the heterogeneous effect we focused on creating variation through the senses, in particular the visual, tactile and olfactory. The diversity in materials not only responds to the buildings’ various programs, private and public spaces, but also creates visual and tactile richness. Thus the project creates wholeness through difference.
In total, the resort has a 66 room hotel, 13 private residences, a health spa by Anandara, 2 restaurants an administration building a 300 meter long beach and other recreational and leisure activities.
