FOX JOHNSTON WINS HIGH COMMENDATION AT 2014 WORLD ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL
Wentworth Park apartment building, designed by Fox Johnston in association with Nettleton Tribe, has won a prestigious High Commendation award in the Future Project Residential category at the 2014 World Architecture Festival in Singapore on Friday.
The project was Fox Johnston’s entry into a limited invitation competition for a unique site on Sydney’s inner city Wentworth Park.
Fox Johnston/Nettleton Tribe’s building comprises two distinct volumes wrapping around the north, east and west perimeters, split by a central urban street. The buildings have been carefully modulated to maximise views and northern sunlight into all apartments, and careful planning ensures the buildings exceed all BASIX requirements.
Apartments are 100% cross-ventilated with 98% of apartments receiving more than 2 hours of sunlight. Access to apartments is via walkways that act as public streets, benefitting from open breezes, sunlight and views through the building. Garden spaces provide a lush green outlook, and roof areas are used as garden spaces, assisting thermal mass.
Conrad Johnston, Director of Fox Johnston, praised the City of Sydney’s design-lead focus, and in particular, its policy of linking emerging architects with property developers. This has generated some exciting architectural responses as the inner city area becomes more densely inhabited.
“Sydney has an abundance of natural advantages – sunlight, space, a temperate climate – however we face the same challenges that urban areas face all over the world, As in most cities. In some ways that has made the commercial property sector lazy. It has certainly generated a lot of undifferentiated apartment buildings.
“The challenge is to balance privacy, space, access to light, air and views for residents with a sense of community, to do that in a way that is sustainable and benefits the public as a whole. That was our starting point for this building, “ he said.
‘By encouraging architectural innovation and a more design-conscious approach by both public and private sectors, the City of Sydney is creating a more sustainable, more liveable, exciting city into the future.“

Further Information on this central Sydney property design:
Passive garden spaces sit to the south of the site, providing a lush green outlook from within the building as well as providing landscape relief from the neighbouring developments. Roof areas throughout are intended to be used as garden spaces, providing good thermal properties for the building.
Energy efficient design and building response have been developed through passive design and sun controlling elements. Solar access, natural ventilation and thermal massing characterise this development, achieving high personal comfort and low energy consumption for the buildings’ occupants. Several environmentally sensitive design principles have been adhered to. The majority of apartments are fully cross ventilated and achieve more than optimal sun filtration into habitable spaces. Winter gardens and balconies have been provided to reduce heat gain into habitable spaces, with the majority of apartments maximising their northern aspect.
The proposed design well exceeds the City Of Sydney BASIX targets for energy, water and thermal comfort – setting a new benchmark in sustainable design. This is due to the buildings efficient design in terms of apartment orientation, apartment depth and cross ventilation. This will result in a decreased energy consumption for the ongoing running of the building and will well exceed the BASIX targets set out by NSW regulation.
